Work continues apace. I've decided to completely remodel the outer hull of the engine/weapon pods. Gone are the guns and insets. More greebles on the engine shrouds and detailed thrust cones have been put inside. I know they are not in the textures, but I hate having big gaping empty holes. Likewise with the greebles.

Looks great, as always! But, tell us again what happened with the side guns and engine intakes? :(
-
Way cool, man!

I took them off temporarily. With them off the mesh, I can work on the hull itself very carefully. Later, I'll go back and add them back in.

You don't need intakes in space. What are you gonna in-take? Vacuum?

nebula.

mmmm, and how many polys this far? just curious.
-
What program do you use?

You don't need intakes in space, but the Herc textures clearly show five distinct intakes. Maybe its for atmospheric ramjets or something.
I've used Lightwave for all of it, and we're sitting at around 19k polys. I burned a lot of polys on the engine greebles that you can't necessarily see except up close. :D if you didn't have the greebles, you'd be at about... oh, 10k polys or so. This is going to keep going up as I put the fuselage molding in, with the pipes and all of that stuff.
[edit]
Oops. Um... Make that closer to 34000 polys total. And 15000 of those are greebles and nurnies. :D

Now that's the way models should be done. I only wish I had more time to go back and work on fun things like that :(
You're planning on using them in renders, right? Any movies on the horizon?

Me? Heck no. I'm just doing it because I have no job and need something to do to keep me sane.
Now, Darkage, I think is planning on using some of this stuff, and someone else expressed interest in higher poly models in LW format for use in animations and stills. But me? I don't really animate. I just screw around with modelling.

Get on AIM, if you're that bored I've got a billion things for you to do ;)
Seriously though, I just realized how totally screwed we are if we dont get a certain few things in asap
-
Yeah, don't make it too streamlined.
-
It shouldn't end up streamlined any more than the original. I'm using the original mesh, sometimes on a background layer, to make sure I don't get away from the original model too much.

The intakes in Wing Commander were once described as being some sort of electron scoop or something....the slightest stray particle could slow the vessel down.
Its sci-fi, it just has to look cool and work reasonably well :D

Works for me. I just wish they weren't there. They're the second worst part of the design (the first being the secondary launcher placement). They just get in the way, forcing the guns over to the extreme edge of the pod, which makes the whole thing more annoying. :D
If I had my way, the Herc would only have 2 engines and they'd be mounted centerline. The side pods would be dedicated entirely to weapons. Ah well, back to work. :)

but that would look uncool ;)

I am planning to use all your High poly sweetness;)
I am already doing some out lines of the new animation on some paper skecthes. And once you have like 10 High poly meshes i'll start on doing some realy neat stuff. In that time i am gonna learn new stuff like 3D nebs and ****.

Yeah, I know. :blah:
If anyone has any suggestions for detailing the insides of the intakes, I'm listening. :D

control exhausts?

decelleration engines?

BEST. IDEA. EVAR.
It makes so much more sense than intakes, and it will save me huge amounts of work. Thank, Carl! :)

Actually, that's almost what they did with the Loki. The side wings are for weapons only.
