Title: Get Your Cutscenes Now
Post by: karajorma on August 02, 2003, 01:23:17 pm
Okay everyone. The FS2 Cutscenes are up on Fractux's FTP server in avi format.

Details are on this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,16047.0.html) thread if you don't know how to log on to it.

There is a tiny glitch at the start of the intro but that was due to the MVE2AVI so I've got no idea how to correct it. Apart from that they should all be fine.

Karajorma's Guide to getting the cutscenes to work in FS2_open.

Unfortunately getting the cutscenes to work isn't as simple as bunging them on your hard drive. It's relatively painless though if you follow these simple steps.

1) Put the movies in your FREESPACE folder. Don't put them in data. Don't put them in data\movies.  Even if you run freespace with the -mod switch they won't work if you put them anywhere except in your main Freespace folder.

2) Download this (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/FS2_Open-WithMovies.zip) file. Unzip it and stick the file inside your freespace\data\missions folder.
That's an updated version of the campaign file with the names of the movies altered.

3) Download FS2_open if you don't alreay have it. The most current update can be found here (http://www.swooh.com/peon/phreak/fs2_open_r.zip)

4) Use the launcher to run FS2. In the Custom section type -dshowvid

5) Hit run. Wince as the small glitch I was unable to correct makes a nasty noise and then sit back and watch some of the best cutscenes ever made. :D

Gives me an error everytime I try to connect with IE. (I'm not paying for an ftp client). Oh well.

*Goes off and converts them himself*

I tried accessing it through Filezilla. First it wouldn't connect at all (too many anonymous users). So I tried again later. When I tried again later, this is what I kept getting(this is only a small portion of it, but the rest of it is just like that):

Response:   200 Type set to I.
Command:   TYPE A
Response:   200 Type set to A.
Command:   TYPE A
Response:   200 Type set to A.
Command:   TYPE A
Response:   200 Type set to A.
Command:   REST 0
Response:   350 REST supported. Ready to resume at byte offset 0.

What is going on?

Well as i listed in ther thread there are only 2 anonymous download slots, so don't be surprised if they are full.

The TYPE A and TYPE I are just the FTP client switching between ASCII and binary transfer modes.

REST 0 the FTP client seting the byte offset to start from for file uploads and then the server just responds.

So, what was the rest of it, and did you connect to the server the second time?

Cheers!

Can somebody get the cutscenes in .mve format so they can be integrated into the campaign a little less painfully?

These standard FS2 cutscenes play in fullscreen. Maybe you were using an earlier version of FS2_open.

Well the thing is if you were able to convert the videos into .avi format, wouldnt you have the originals in .mve format that are integrated into the game? I dont mean to bash you helpfullness in bringing to the FS community the missing FS2 files. All im asking is a way to integrate them into the proper cutscene positions if possible. ;)

There are only two things missing in FS2_open that aren't in FS2. That's the MVE playing code and the PXO stuff.

Until I converted the avi's not being able to play the MVE files was a good reason to use FS2 1.2 If you wanted to replay the main campaign you wouldn't get to see the cutscenes.

However now that the cutscenes have been converted there's no good reason to use FS2 1.2 any more for the main campaign. FS2_open will play the movies just as well as FS2 did (better in fact since now they play off the HD without asking for the CDs). You get to see all the cutscenes in the right places but now you also get the improvements that FS2_open made to the game.

Secondly Fractux's server is limited in the number of people it can serve at any one time. The avi files take up 134 Meg in total. The MVE files take up 4 times that amount. If they were uploaded it would mean that traffic on the server for the movies would become 4 times as bad.
As it is I see people complaining that they can't connect. I'm not about to upload something that will make things 5 times worse just because some people can't be bothered to spend 5 minutes downloading and setting up FS2_open.
