Ok, here's what I am working on. People will beable to download all of these files and then just have a full fledged system install. It will run through an install routine so people won't have to go seaching around for all of the files.
If I could get peoples input of what they would like to see included in the release, that would be great!
PLEASE NOTE this is still a work in progress. Nothing is final, so please, make suggestions!
Here's the README i will include:
Freespace2 Open 3.5.5 FULL INSTALL

When you go to play FS2, you must first set up the launcher.
1. Launch the game through a shortcut (or open Launcher.exe in the game
directory)
2. Hit 'BROWSE' and Locate the fs2_open_XXX.exe in the game directory.
3. Set up your video, audio, and joystick settings.
*note: the original exe files are included.
You should also check the FSSCP for newer releases that contain

If you like what you see, consider giving back to the community by
providing them with your skills!
All parts of this installation are the property of their respective
owners.
I've also insluded another text file (not the readme) that will pop at the end on the installation. It is intended to explain what exactly the release is, and that FS2 Open is also A WIP (so they should check for updates... yada yada)
Anyways, here's what I put in now.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO NOTE
PLEASE READ IN FULL.

Freespace2 was published with Interplay.

This release uses the ongoing work of the
Freespace Source Code Project.

FS_OPEN is always in constant development, and
it is recommended that you visit their webpage after
installation to check for any new realeases and updates,
as they will contain bug fixes and enhancements for you
to take advantage of.
The software included in this release comes with

********************************************************
On top of that, the official FS2Open readme is in there. What I'm going to put in in the readme is a list of enhancements in the current official version that have been made.
So also let me know what info you think I should put in there!
So I'm working with the Inno Setup compiler [just learned how to use it today] to get a version together that people could just download, and have all the .VP files, and Games files, and not having to search for anything.
It's going to be a big download, But I've split it ip into ~25MB BIN files so that people could get it in chunks.
*** The size it is at now with all of this is 809MB.
it is going to get bigger for sure because I want to add the
Modding tools and utilities the community has developped. However I was thinking of having several versions available.
Anyways, more info to follow as I progress.
**************************
UPDATE
Okay, I updated the readme and info files for now. What I need to do is as follows:
I am also going to get the official FSSCP readme to lauch as well after installation. [ http://fs2source.warpcore.org/readme/readme_3.6.txt is the latest one I found ]
What I was wondering is how to credit those who contibuted to the unofficial media vp???
-
maybe we can supply it as bittorrent files?
that means people here actually has to do their part and share it, tho.
-
I've got my first version finished, it weighs in at 792MB.
Not much more I can trim off of that. I've split is so that the files can be placed on 2 650MB CD's.
Next thing I have to workin on is perfecting the .ini file to create an uninstall routine.
Cheers!

My concern is mainly that the FTP server can server out the .VP files, but for a huge lunp like this, my FTP server just doesn't cut it. Besides, those who use my FTP server are most likely the one's who downloaded the HOTU version.
Anyways I'll look around as well.
Cheers!
-
OK I tried it out and it works perfectly.
The setup routine goes by fine, it puts the shorcut in the start menu, and when you lauch it it opens the Launcher... all good. :)
Oh yeah, and it configures the unintall automatically.. hehe WOOT!!
-
Boy, for some reason I thought there would be some more interest in this.
Cheers!
-
well, I have an interest in this. maybe you should give people some more time to find and read the thread.
-
If we want to promote FS2open and get more people, this definately is the way to go.
-
Just putting the package together again, I forgot to include some shortcuts and the unofficial media .vp from the fsscp.
Anyways, everything works perfectly.
I'll edit this and put in the final file size.
It came out to being 799MB in total.
Now, it is split up into into 32 .bin files, of 25MB apeice, that can be spanned over 2 cd's [cd1: 650MB, cd2: 149MB]
-
so then we can put some campaigns and stuff on what's left of the second cd, as an optional download package, perhaps?
-
I thought Fileplanet was great for big downloads... Not that I would want to download that much from them, but they will host it.
-
you are surely doing a great thing, but...
1-I'm not sure it will be completely legal to distribute it.
and don't say: "hey but there is the HOTU version free for download".
HOTU isn't completely legal itself.
They just assume that nobody will claim rights on the games they distribute since those games are old and have exhausted their commercial utility, but this doesn't mean that they have permission.
Personally I think they probably had informal contacts with the software houses before adding the games to their site, but as said this doesn't mean that1 HOTU is legal, and probably it will be not completely legal to distribute what you have done too
2-related to first one, I think it will be hard to find enough webspace where to place it. Sites like gamespy or many others related to games and that could be interested, usually pay extreme attention about possible copyright violations. Bittorrent is a partial solution (but still you'd need to find the space, or am I wrong?). Peer to peer may be another way to distribute it.
-

That's the only way I could really think about it. Because like you said, the legality of it is in question.
So, I was thinking I'd just package it, and go from there.
-
Assuming you can get a system set up for like weekly downloads one can HOST he files and have the link with hook up info listed as to when you will bemaking your computer "available" to DL from those FS2 files needed...
Sound right?
-
maybe we would be more exited if we all didn't have a full instal alredy, pimp it somewere with people that don't have fs2
-
Well, I'm trying to 'pimp' it here because:
a. I'd like to know if people though this would at all help with spreading the word about FS2 and all the work people are putting into it
b. so that people would know about it and be able to pass the word on that such a compilation is available.
c. to make it easier for people who are lazy and don't want to search around for all the files to have a package that represents all the work that peole have put into it.
d. to get people's feedback as to what exactly should be included.
I'm posting the info here because I wanted to get some responses since I know I read other threads where this was one thing that was mentined.
Cheers!
-
Great work, Fractux. :) I'll go contact FilePlanet about this, they may be interested in making something of it.
-
Well if you get Fileplanet to help out have GE (or someone else) make a .VP will all the Port files (someone would have to get the AVIs of FS1). That way you can get FS2 AND FS1!

I have almost all of the movies from FS1 on my FTP server, uploaded by DracosX. Here are the ones I have:
ancients1 through 5
commandbrief
hallfight
intro
But you can get all of the FS1 VP files from fileplanet already! linked from the fs1 port website.
-
Well, I worked out all of the little quirks I discovered while testing.
I'm going to do a bit more testing before I put it up on the FTP server, but there should not be any problems.
It finally weighs in at a grand total of 809MB.
Cheers!

Let me say firstly that I have complete copies of both FS1/ST and FS2 so this would be of little use to me, but considering the limited availablilty of retail FS2, I think this is a beneficial idea, if you can get around the hosting and legal issues. I do have some concerns however:
1. You have billed this as FS2_Open 3.5.5 Full Install, and while it may be true, there should be a message mentioning the work-in-progress status of the "Open" features, and thus it will not function like clock-work. On the same line, I hope you plan on including the 1.2 update (or perhaps pre-installed) for the regular, and the FS2 standard exe.
2. Billing its support for Open, you may want to eventually release an exclusively Open version, once things have settled down somewhat stabilitywise, and especially once support for higher compression format audio and image files has been included and perfected (assuming they will be). This would go a long way to compensating for the large size of the install. This would however, obviously negate the use of FS2 original in this release.
Later!

Well said, but as long as its carefully done we should be fine. Besides, I only dislike warez and such out of the fact that it can't be discussed here. Any way to circulate FS2 to more people at this stage is a great idea, so long as it doesn't upset 3DAP, Volition or anyone else...

I'm also aware of the legal issues that could be involved. However, fileplanet did host the Fs1 .VP files, so as far as I can tell, other than the .avi movies, we should not really have to worry.
repsonse to 1. If you read the README i pasted, i did include the v1.2 exe files in the package. When the game gets installed, all of the original .exe files are placed in a subdirectory in the main game folder. The only .exe file that get's placed there is the fs_open_3.5.5.exe and Launcher (2.5).
I'm going to see if I can get setup to first lauch a text file stating that FS_OPEN is a work in progress, and that it may not work on all systems. That's why the original .exe files will be included. [Also if people want to use FRED2 instead]
in response to 2. That's why I included the fsscp unofficial media VP, and why I placed some of the textures from FS1 to FS2 port in the package.
Tolwyn, I will send you an email about it when I finalize everything. The size won't change from the 809MB package it is now.

I agree, that I don't want to upset anyone.
Cheers!

personally I think someone should try to contact :v: or/and interplay, and ask for permission to distribute this thing
It may sound excessive at a first time, but clarifying this point could bring in my opinion incredible advantages for the community.
If they don't care anymore about the artwork (until it isn't used for profit), modders will be free to release their campaigns as complete games, creating single complete downloads built specifically to run a campaign, or maybe we can use fso as a shared platform for different campaigns; we could use this freespace special release to pimp the game out of the community, expecially once the ht&l system will be fully implemented and debugged; we may find magazines interested in publishing it with a collection of mods... having this permission would mean to open many new interesting horizonts, that could be partially opened now only completely remaking all the interface
-
you should include the origonal fs2 exe, as well as the latest offical relese, give out a link to the SCP website and forum
-
another idea, add a few campaigns with a good quality/size ratio, and prepare shortcuts for FS_OPEN using the mod flag, test all fot these camps under FS_OPEN, and put these shortcuts in a seperate start-menu subfolder with FS2. this way, people can play mods without having to think, making this package available and helpfull to an even wider group of people.
and for hosting, talk to an0n, he might have some space left over.
as for legality, interplay can;t say nothing, they say they don't have the rights no more, so they can't sue you and say that you knew they had the gihts or something, so you'd only need to contact :V:.
but can anyone answer this, if you try your best to contact an organisation about a copyright, but they don't respond, and you break the right, can they sue you?
-

Unfortunately they can. Trade Marks must be defended. If I wrote a letter to Microsoft and said that I was planning to make a new company with the same name they would have to tell me to stop immediately. IF I went ahead they would lose the right to sue me.
AFAIK copywrite isn't treated the same way. Anything I copywrite belongs to me. If I choose to do so I can let everyone pirate it and then only sue the RIAA/Bill Gates/George Bush/Everyone else I don't like.
-
I agree that I don't want to rush into putting up this compilation, only to find a team of lawyers on my ass.
I'll contact V and see what they have to say about it. But first off, anyone know the contact address I should use?
I haven't found any pertinent one listed on the V website.
Like I said before, Fileplanet hoster the Fs1 VP files, but I still would like to get confirmation so I don't make false assumptions.
I'm keeping note of all the suggestions, especially the inclusion of Mods.
I think that could be a big point to include a few in the package. That will let people know there are quality mods out there and that the FS2 engine is still an option for mod developers.
-
It would be better someone who represent the community to contact :v: , maybe setekh, but if you are going to do so, just make it clear that this "project" will be completely non commercial, there will be no profit at all (or if there will be any it won't happen without their permission), credits will always be given, the project is intended to help the community of modders, etc etc
-

Perhaps you're right. It may be perceived in a different like if someone more familiar to them contacts them about this posibility?
As far as giving cretit, I'm making sure to put all of that in with the readme file.
Please keep giving me your suggestions and ideas, as all I'm trying to do is collect some of the major parts of the communities work into a consolidated package.
Cheers!

Updated my first post. Please give it a look and get back to me with your suggestions!

Whoa hey hold your horses there. With this new development coming to light [ see thread ] (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,18490.0.html) we now have to figure out what the heck is going on.
Oh yeah, and it's not available for download, so it's best if you just point people to karajorma's site as a starting point.
Cheers!
-
I had some more thoughts on the subject, and they had to do with diferent versions.
1. HOTU download repackaged with an installer. This would be a small version of 300MB - 350MB maximum. [this is because we'll include sparky_hi ]
2. Full Intstallation. All the bells and wistles, this would be about 850MB [ it would also include the utilities like the FSProKit.. etc..
3. .VP file kits - music, voices, etc.
4. .AVI kit - the missing cutscenes from the base package.
By breaking it down into components like this, it may get more coverage.
I was thinking again about the MOD packages, but I'm not sure what to do in that repsect.
Putting in the full FS1 2.2 port [with the voice, music and animations ] would add another 250 or so MB's.
And then it comes to deciding what other MODS to put in. I would think that at leat one should be included.
So having fs1 port plus a mod or two would boost it up to 1.3GB or so.
Maybe it's not worth it?
Or instead of MODS, just add in a buch of the best player made campains, missions, etc. etc???
I think that may be the better way to go. So that with the install to also put a comprehensive list of the MODS available, as well as tutorials, community supports etc.
Anyways, just some thoughts.
-
A "comprehensive list" is worthless, since you'd have to be constantly repackage it. A better solution would be a link Skippy's campaign list, here and , VWatch, since about all the mods are referenced from one of those places anyway.
-
Nice work on the installer, Fractux. :)
-
Maybe if you wait 50 years, the copyright will expire and it will be legal... :D
-
You guys rock. o.O
-
It's a bit overwhelming, isn't it? ;) Download this, and play it after you've finished the main FS2 campaign in the original version. :)
-
UPDATE
Okay, I updated the readme and info files for now. What I need to do is as follows:

-
ask in the thread about it in the SCP FAQ forum, i thought WM-Coolmon put it together, but i'm not sure.
-
Here is what the licence will read at the start of the install.
Freespace 2 is © Volition Inc., THQ, Interplay, PXO, SquadWar.
All rights reserved.
THIS SOFTWARE IS NOT FOR SALE.
FS_OPEN is being developed through the efforts of the
Freespace Source Code Project.
Any additional materials included have been taken from
members of the Freespace communities, and are freely
available outside of this package.
You may not sell or otherwise commercially exploit anything
from this package, or anything created with this package.
ALL CONTENT IS THE PROPETY OF ITS REPECTIVE OWNERS.
-
The last sentence should read:
"All content is the property of its respective owners"
IMO, mispellings on legal stuff is a big no-no.
-
Hmm for some reason spelcheck ain't detecting that one.. heh..
Thanks for pointing that out.
Cheers!

Subject: RE: A feature: full download of FreeSpace 2 Open
Hi Setekh,
Thanks for your e-mail. I was actually not familiar with the efforts to update FreeSpace 2. This is an impressive and exciting project. I would be happy to host the file and promote it like crazy on the front page of FilePlanet and in our weekly newsletters. I'll do everything I can to make sure that the 8-10 million monthly visitors to FilePlanet know all about it. :-)
I do have a few questions for you. First, can you point me to the license agreement for the source code? I'm sure you guys have thought all this through, but I want to at least glance at the license to be sure that the distribution would be legal. Second, when do you think the final version will be ready for release? And third, would you be willing to let FilePlanet Subscribers beta test it before the final release? This would give me a reason to promote the release even more, and give a little perk to the guys who pay for the bandwidth. I can give you and your team complementary accounts, naturally.

As cool as that is, I feel oddly resentful that their subscribers should get such a perk.
Why is beyond me. Probably something stemming from my childhood.

Hi !!!
where i can get that ????
PS do anybody knows where i can download full sounds for FS 2 ???

Awesome Setekh. All you have to do now is check the fine print for any "ifs", "ands", or "buts"

That's suprisingly and refreshingly enthusiastic. Wow! As far as legality is concerned, I think the only risk, as we've said all along, comes in the artwork and supporting files. All of that hazy IP stuff. But if they can host TC's to universes such as B5 and ST, then I can't really see the rather obscure Freespace universe being too much trouble. Best to play it safe I know, but that's just my $.02

Yes. Please. I beg of you. I'm retarded when it comes to entering information in the tables or putting the exact .pcx file where it's supposed to go. I really hope this works out!

If I remember correctly you can just type in anything you want as the password as long as you've used the correct username.
Have a look at this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,16047.0.html) for more details.
