I'm not normally into the whole Japanese retro shooter homebrew scene, but some guys on the Quarter to Three forums were raving about this one, and I was bored this weekend, so I figured what the hell...
Woah.
Okay, so it's yet another arcade shooter with vector-looking retro graphics, right? Except, there are a few things which make this one stand out. First, it's ONLY boss battles. You fight exactly one enemy at a time, and each one is bigger/badder than the last.
Second, each successive boss evolves based on your tactics. Wipe one boss out from the front, and the next boss will have a better-protected front. It's almost like you're selectively breeding them. Create your own monster, so to speak.
Third... it has BEAMS! Actually the whole thing has kind of a "if Freespace 2 was a top-down arcade game" vibe to it. The larger bosses look vaguely Shivan (in a green sort of way), and are armed with all the weapon types we've come to love-- beams, lasers, homing missiles, flak... it's all there. And just like Freespace, you can choose to plink off individual turrets or just go for the whole subsystem.
It does have a somewhat odd aiming scheme -- a cone extending from your ship that you sort of drag around by moving. But once you get used to it (and fire up some good blasting music in the background, since this game comes with none), it's digital crack.

LOL Yup, reminds me of my old arcade visiting days :)
I don't see the addiction lasting long, but fun while it lasts :)
-
I can't remember the name of it, but the Japanese have this really neat concept of making these kind of freeware games with little unique twists in gameplay / structure and usually funky graphics.
-
*is hooked*
-
BTW, if anyone tries it I recommend heading straight to the custom difficulty settings and setting it up for 999 seconds with unlimited ships. Highest I've gotten this way is level 22.
Also, it IS possible to destroy the core without destroying all the attached parts first-- it just takes a while. The rule seems to be that each piece's hit points are equal to all the subpieces attached to it.
And apparently the hit area of your ship is a single pixel! Can't say it's not fair with you.

Yes, and sometimes those homebrew things become real games. EveryExtend got picked up as a PSP game, for example (although it shifted from cel-shaded graphics to this neon-glow thing. The new look rocks unbelievably).
Back to the topic at hand: I think this thing just won a place on my laptop. It looks like a lot of fun. Good spot, ZB.
-
Dude. This is one of the greatest shooters I've ever played. :)
-
this thing is crazy awesome, furthest i've got (default settings) is level 10 so far...
-
  ;7
:nervous:
-
I get my ass waxed at around level 15, when ships armed with about twelve beams light space up like a red version of the CBAni grid.
-
LOL Same here, level 13, it was like driving through a Jean Michelle Jarre concert ;)
-
And now, I queue up JMJ music to spur me on to blow up more alien motherships!
-
How the hell do you even maneuver? The ship takes up too much freaking space!

I get ships with 12 beams around level 6...
The worst is those damn "smash" things, and the bloody ring things...
some stuff:

I most often end up with the Phoenix...

You get in close and start taking off arms at the root.
-
do the weapons have more firepower when in the forward locked position, and how do I take advantage of a weak defence?, does that just mean they are tougher skined, or what?
-

And pray that the AI doesn't decide to put the entire ship into a spin. Those things do a mean Death Blossom.
At least you get some warning on the beams. They're not lethal until they go full-intensity.
-
Level 17 on my first try using the prescribed custom settings. I hate those stupid purple shotgun blasts.
Meh, this time the AI upped the homing missiles that can loop like 3 times chasing me down in limited room at level 21 =/
This time I get smashed by those round bullet bursts at level 23 ><

I dont think the weapons position has anything to do with firepower, just generator.
I'm not usre what defence does, it might increase hit points, or it might have somthing to do with the peices turning gold and becoming invincible.
-
This game is crazy addictive. Damn.
-
I've gone upto level 20 so far. But after level 15 or so, the screen is so full of projectiles and such, sometmies the only the way I dodge em is like Neo dodging Agent smith's bullets...almost. >_<
I usually get the 12 beam thingys at around level 7 tho. By the time they hit levle 12, I usually get twenty, all firing and trying to hit me like god-knows-what.
-
That said, normally I end up getting Pheonix and the infinity as well...hmm...odd...
-
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/showthread.php?t=30652
Has lots of info on how to get crtin bosses and stuff...
-
I tried a different strategy and got this one that had four arms, one for each corner, and a head shaped like that of a pheonix.
I usually get a pheonix, though.
-
well if you don't want that, stop attacking from below.
-
I can't seem to get the firing cone where I want it. How do you 'lock' it in a certain position?
-
Start firing. That locks it in whatever position it's in.
-

When you start shooting it locks, only way I know of atleast.
It's not that hard though after a little practice.
This game is dangerously addicting :D
-
Usually I don't touch games in this genre with a ten foot pole, but what the hell *downloads*
-
Okay. Addicted.
-
Heheh.
-
I like the difference of 3 hours and 9 minutes between Primus' posts.
-
:shaking: The game was running on background when I posted. I stopped playing it EDIT: three hours ago.
-
Chalk me up to the fanclub rooster.
-
I can't get past level 15. No matter which creature I'm fighting, it rapes me with a chainsaw.
-
I got up to level 28, with the custom settings.
The creature was really kick-ass then, got me at least 5 times each round till I finally got it!
-
Okay, so I changed it to infinite lives and 999s like ZB suggested. Now I can get up to lvl18. :D
-
Oooh, this is fun. Not quite as hypnotic as something like Ikaruga, but certainly a good challenge.
-
you know I think it's a bit easier with the max lives on infinite time.
-
Probably....
-
Doubtful, unless you're a Moon Master at dodging bullets. Every time you get killed it subtracts 30 seconds from the timer, so that's a theoretical 33 starting lives right there, vs the piddly 9 lives you can give yourself in the custom menu.
Of course it doesn't work out exactly that way because killing bosses takes time and earns time. My current best is stage 28, with 39 deaths total.
-
Woot. Finally got the Ise-One. Still havent figured out exactly what triggers an armor evolution, think you need to balance turrets destroyed between the side and front while destroying every single body piece.
Got as far as The Ise-One with Giga-Cannons Gonzalez before he killed me off. Man, that thing is rough. Lots of turrets, lots of armor so no super easy arm knockoffs, as much defense as any armor form, and it spins like mad. Vicious.
-
I can't get ISE-ONE no matter what I do. :/
-
This is a truly addictive and awesome game, methinks. If you fool around a bit, you can edit the .cfg file to give you unlimited lives AND unlimited time :drevil: .
-
I seriously had to resist the urge to DL this
-
Uhm... why?
And did you succeed?
-
Christ. There I was dodging a bajillion BRAZILLIAN bullets and doing damned well, and then I hit level 18 again. And then it was like there was more bullets and beams than there was boss. I lost like 11 lives right there.
-
I just couldn't bring myself to DL it. It seems to be too addictive for the balance of you guys. What would happen to me? I already have wasted too much time tonight on this.
Sssslllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppp
-
Blimey. This has become my "go to" game when I'm bored. Its compact 13-15min chunks of pure entertainment.
I need to find a good strategy early on to reduce the number of vulcan and needlers that come out. I've tried dying to beams and the like, but it doesn't seem to cut back the raw number of spread fire, straight fire and burst fire bullets there are.
I can get to lvl 19 consistently now, but never with enough time to go on. :(
-
Mikhael
I like your location
What is RTP though.
-
Excellent find, Zylon. :) Bloody hard, though. Bog-standard settigs, I seem to get to level 8 every time, then get killed every couple of seconds until I run out of time...
-
by cheating, I've learned that level 20 seems to be just about the worst it gets, after that it doesn't seem to get much nastier.
(got to level 50)
-
RTP=Research Triangle Park.
Google it.
-
why?
-
Level 16, woohoo!!
*Ahem...* :nervous:
-
You know, I can't for the life of me figure out how to edit the .ini file to produce the infine/infinite combination. Every way I try results in 0 lives rather than infinite lives.
-
meh if we had the source, we could just put in "time_remaining = 999;" somewhere and be done with it
-

Just got an infinity that should be called the "Beam Cannon Incarnate"
I was completely overwhelmed with the sheer power of that beast! It kept using beam cannons that were as wide as my fighter was long on rapid fire, while tracking me on those arms and spinning around like an Ise-one on crack. Its rear and front points were completely maxed out, while defence was just about nil. I hope that never happens again!
-
I just cracked level 20 for the first time. It was an Infinity of some variety. I find the Infinity a hell of a lot easier than the Phoenix that preceeds it. With the Infinity I just burrow in at the convenient joints (you really have to chew through the bastard like a chestburster its so big).
-
I got into the game recently and started a topic of my own here, didn't realize this one existed. :doubt:
I once got "Penta-Forced Wing Arms", then "Penta-Forced Wing Arms Returns", then "Penta-Forced Wing Arms Hell".
-
I cant get past the menu, i can select up and down with the arrow keys but enter doesent do anything. :blah:
EDIT: Nevermind
What is ship extend? And how exactly do you hack it to have unlimited time?
-
Still, a 2 year necro? I think starting a new topic is understandable, as I'd imagine there might be some changes to the game, or a new one entirely.

Two years? You've gotta be kidding me! redsniper alerted me to this thread, and I didn't think to check the last post date before posting here, assuming it was alive and well. Yes, I do know what I do when I assume things. :(
-
It's actually more like a year-and-a-half necro, but yeah... ;)
-
So... has there been an update or new version released? ;) :p
-
No, but I do recommend another game made by him, called Ray Hound:

-
What does ship extend do? And how do I hack it so I have unlimited time AND unlimited lives?
-
Good god, I started this thread back in 2005?!?
Damn, a year or two used to mean something...
-
Crazy, ain't it?
-
Well, thanks to this thread I have found the penultimate time-eater game XDD Thanks for the necro, dude :D
I seem to have trouble getting anythig other than Widers or Attackers...I'm trying to get an ISE-ONE but I'm having trouble doing it. Any pointers? (gun angle, things to attack etc) --- the wikipedia would appear to not be entirely right on this game because i don't get Armor ships even though I'm shooting the right parts...
-
And here I was about to say "You should know better, this belongs in Games and Gaming!"...
Heck, this is so old, I can't even bring myself to move it.

There's already a Warning Forever topic in Games and Gaming. Mine.

played it for 4 hours the other day, said meh, and whent back to coding.

"Meh" after 4 hours of gameplay? ;)
-
This is actually a very fun game. The aiming system works quite well, once you learn how to use it.

So don't leave us in suspense. What's the even better time-eater than this?

Dont click unless you have a minimum of four hours to blow.

Grief this game is addictive. (Warning Forever) I'd better get rid of it before it gets me fired!

Well, I have yet to find it, either -- but it must be out there. :pimp:
-
he's probably talking about rayhounds or thewahtever it's called, I've never played it on acount of it not working on my computer for absolutly no reason at all.
-
Actually, he's talking about Falling Sand Game, not Ray-Hound.
