Title: Warning Forever
Post by: ZylonBane on October 10, 2005, 04:15:11 pm
I'm not normally into the whole Japanese retro shooter homebrew scene, but some guys on the Quarter to Three forums were raving about this one, and I was bored this weekend, so I figured what the hell...

Woah.

Okay, so it's yet another arcade shooter with vector-looking retro graphics, right? Except, there are a few things which make this one stand out. First, it's ONLY boss battles. You fight exactly one enemy at a time, and each one is bigger/badder than the last.

Second, each successive boss evolves based on your tactics. Wipe one boss out from the front, and the next boss will have a better-protected front. It's almost like you're selectively breeding them. Create your own monster, so to speak.

Third... it has BEAMS! Actually the whole thing has kind of a "if Freespace 2 was a top-down arcade game" vibe to it. The larger bosses look vaguely Shivan (in a green sort of way), and are armed with all the weapon types we've come to love-- beams, lasers, homing missiles, flak... it's all there. And just like Freespace, you can choose to plink off individual turrets or just go for the whole subsystem.

It does have a somewhat odd aiming scheme -- a cone extending from your ship that you sort of drag around by moving. But once you get used to it (and fire up some good blasting music in the background, since this game comes with none), it's digital crack.

LOL Yup, reminds me of my old arcade visiting days :)

I don't see the addiction lasting long, but fun while it lasts :)

I can't remember the name of it, but the Japanese have this really neat concept of making these kind of freeware games with little unique twists in gameplay / structure and usually funky graphics.

BTW, if anyone tries it I recommend heading straight to the custom difficulty settings and setting it up for 999 seconds with unlimited ships. Highest I've gotten this way is level 22.

Also, it IS possible to destroy the core without destroying all the attached parts first-- it just takes a while. The rule seems to be that each piece's hit points are equal to all the subpieces attached to it.

And apparently the hit area of your ship is a single pixel! Can't say it's not fair with you.

Yes, and sometimes those homebrew things become real games. EveryExtend got picked up as a PSP game, for example (although it shifted from cel-shaded graphics to this neon-glow thing. The new look rocks unbelievably).

Back to the topic at hand: I think this thing just won a place on my laptop. It looks like a lot of fun. Good spot, ZB.

I get my ass waxed at around level 15, when ships armed with about twelve beams light space up like a red version of the CBAni grid.

You get in close and start taking off arms at the root.

do the weapons have more firepower when in the forward locked position, and how do I take advantage of a weak defence?, does that just mean they are tougher skined, or what?

And pray that the AI doesn't decide to put the entire ship into a spin. Those things do a mean Death Blossom.

At least you get some warning on the beams. They're not lethal until they go full-intensity.

Level 17 on my first try using the prescribed custom settings.  I hate those stupid purple shotgun blasts.

Meh, this time the AI upped the homing missiles that can loop like 3 times chasing me down in limited room at level 21 =/

This time I get smashed by those round bullet bursts at level 23 ><

I dont think the weapons position has anything to do with firepower, just generator.

I'm not usre what defence does, it might increase hit points, or it might have somthing to do with the peices turning gold and becoming invincible.

I've gone upto level 20 so far. But after level 15 or so, the screen is so full of projectiles and such, sometmies the only the way I dodge em is like Neo dodging Agent smith's bullets...almost. >_<

I usually get the 12 beam thingys at around level 7 tho. By the time they hit levle 12, I usually get twenty, all firing and trying to hit me like god-knows-what.

I usually get a pheonix, though.

Start firing.  That locks it in whatever position it's in.

It's not that hard though after a little practice.

This game is dangerously addicting :D

Probably....
Title: Warning Forever
Post by: ZylonBane on October 16, 2005, 10:42:12 am
Doubtful, unless you're a Moon Master at dodging bullets. Every time you get killed it subtracts 30 seconds from the timer, so that's a theoretical 33 starting lives right there, vs the piddly 9 lives you can give yourself in the custom menu.

Of course it doesn't work out exactly that way because killing bosses takes time and earns time. My current best is stage 28, with 39 deaths total.

Post by: phatosealpha on October 18, 2005, 01:17:35 am
Woot.  Finally got the Ise-One.  Still havent figured out exactly what triggers an armor evolution, think you need to balance turrets destroyed between the side and front while destroying every single body piece.

Got as far as The Ise-One with Giga-Cannons Gonzalez before he killed me off.  Man, that thing is rough.  Lots of turrets, lots of armor so no super easy arm knockoffs, as much defense as any armor form, and it spins like mad.  Vicious.

Christ. There I was dodging a bajillion BRAZILLIAN bullets and doing damned well, and then I hit level 18 again. And then it was like there was more bullets and beams than there was boss. I lost like 11 lives right there.

Post by: Osiri on October 20, 2005, 12:18:18 am
I just couldn't bring myself to DL it.  It seems to be too addictive for the balance of you guys.  What would happen to me?  I already have wasted too much time tonight on this.

Blimey. This has become my "go to" game when I'm bored. Its compact 13-15min chunks of pure entertainment.

I need to find a good strategy early on to reduce the number of vulcan and needlers that come out. I've tried dying to beams and the like, but it doesn't seem to cut back the raw number of spread fire, straight fire and burst fire bullets there are.

I can get to lvl 19 consistently now, but never with enough time to go on. :(

Just got an infinity that should be called the "Beam Cannon Incarnate"

I was completely overwhelmed with the sheer power of that beast!  It kept using beam cannons that were as wide as my fighter was long on rapid fire, while tracking me on those arms and spinning around like an Ise-one on crack.  Its rear and front points were completely maxed out, while defence was just about nil.  I hope that never happens again!

I just cracked level 20 for the first time. It was an Infinity of some variety. I find the Infinity a hell of a lot easier than the Phoenix that preceeds it. With the Infinity I just burrow in at the convenient joints (you really have to chew through the bastard like a chestburster its so big).
