I've never been much of a fan of the LoTR series...

Have you read the book? Should I read the book really really fast before seeing the movie?

If it were months or years before the movie came out, I'd say yes, but don't read it now. You'll just be disappointed by the parts they left out... :-/
Spoiler:
From what I've heard, they left out the whole Tom Bombadil scene... Shame.

Still, I've seen the previews and it looks like a pretty awesome cinematic experience. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

That said - I've read the Hobbit and know a moderate amount about fantasy (I am making Opal Spheres (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)) And lets face it... the Hobbit in the film looks nothing like the Hobbit portrayed in the books. Still, I guess you have to make some concessions to Hollywood (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)

I can avoid being in a crowded, noisy theater.

funny, they look almost exactly like Tolkien drew them

Legolas's character wasn't really developed too thououghly though. Maybe they're saving that for The Two Towers.
