Greets Everyone,
I'm a new guy here (obviously ;)) but I'm a quick study who has had a hand in modding games before. With ALOT of experence in putting together installers and DVD Menus.
So I found Hard Light here and the groovy things you guys have been doing with the FSSCP, really quite cool 8)
But I must say getting all installed and set up can be a bit daunting. Luckly for me, with past modding experience (and healthly dose of forum searching :nervous:) I got everything humming along nicely and didn't even have to ask questions. ;)
After I got all going, I decided, hey how about I build a nice installer for it, so I did. :D
Man, it is REAL PRETTY TOO and works perfectly, hate to brag (but not really) but it's about the prettiest Freespace installer you ever saw too with FS2 graphics thru out, FS2 Background, legal disclaimers, install info, installs complete game with FS Port and campaigns, launches OpenAL setup, starts the FSSCP launcher on exit, installs the online updater, so basically the whole 9 yards!
Then I even went a step further and created a DVD Autorun Menu that is just as pretty and functional, with a DVD Menu that is sure to please any freespace fan :)
Only one problem tho, I'm on Satelite Internet (eek! cringe! gasp!) and absolutely have no way or place to upload this monster.
However, if someone with access to the a place to upload for the community, I would be happy to mail a DVD to them for posting (after they thoroughly scan and test it, just to be safe) for the whole community!
Consider it a tribute from one modder to another (or others as the case may be) for all the fine work done here.
Any Takers?
hip63 :p
P.S. - For those asking, 'so what was his past modding I wonder?'
Here's a sample of my work for Fighter Squadron: Screamin' Demons Over Europe (A game older that Freespace, LOL)
(I did all that work, might as well show it off, right?)
Albert Terrain:

Mediterranean Terrain:

And a butt-load of missions and skin packs (with help) for said game :)
and yeah, it was a real effort to get those uploaded, even tho they are WAY smaller (less the 100megs) the the Freespace Installer I built for you guys (almost 2 gigs)
BTW - All FS-SDOE Mods are free too :D

Now how's that for an entrance and first post!
Later Tater........

Oh and one last note: I'm willing to send this to someone (preferably someone 'in charge') for uploading to a server for the community as a whole enjoy, I will NOT mail it to individuals for individual use. (What? Do you thing I'm made of blank DVDs and postage stamps? LOL )

Now this is interesting. Turey has already built an online installer with auto-updating properties but this is something ShivanSPS might might be interested in working with once the new media VPs are out and he goes to v2.0 of his big download.
Also is there any way to upload the core content (i.e everything you made but not the FS2/FS2_Open content)? That way those of us who know how to use FS2_Open can bundle this onto DVDs ourselves and hand them out to friends while waiting for ShivanSPS to get v2.0 together.
Lastly I've been suggesting for a while that those people interested in making installers get together and make a proper SCP installation team. Would you be interested in helping out with that?

Well, Hell yeah! (in my best Austin Powers) Installers really are my bag, baby!
Also is there any way to upload the core content (i.e everything you made but not the FS2/FS2_Open content)?
mmm... not really, I think, this disk is pretty custom, you kinda need the whole thing.
Here's a screenie of the DVD menu. NOTE: this pics really doesn't do it full justice with jpg quality loss and the screen on the right with the freespace 2 cover is actually animated, showing the covers of all three official release, one cover fading into the next. The menu also features two minutes of Freespace "Mood" Music and FS radio "click" sounds on the buttons (which are also animated) As you can also see it holds the other major FSSCP projects as well :)
And here's two pics of the first two screens of the FSSCP installer I put together:

Start Menu
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/hip63/freespace/startmenu.jpg)
So you see it's a full deluxe package :D
Oh and in the "extras" you'll find thinks like "late arrivals" a Freespace-ish screensaver, freespace wallpaper, original freespae 2 trailer, original freespace 2 cd extras and more!
So what do you think? Drooling yet or what?
hip63 :p
-
I see an "Update" option, how are you doing that?
I'd love to participate in an Installer team. I don't know about merging into one project, as each one has benefits that might be lost if merged, but having a central place to contact others and make our projects work together better would be very nice.
After Tuesday I'll have a lot more time, as Robotics will be over, so maybe I'll have time between working on school and my Installer and BtRL to work on a place for us Installer people to congregate.
-
it's yours dude :)
I just have it packed in with everything else
So you can use the installer to get the base full install & keep it up to date with your updater.
Hey! maybe we could sell this idea to microsoft! LOL

Welcome to the HLP forums, hip63. Current top-side temperature is 40532 degrees centigrade, with internal temperatures being in the somewhat high side of 30 degrees centigrade.
In case of emergency, exits are located to your right and left, and flamethrowers are found under the seats. Be careful, though, as due to budget cuts are usually filled with dihydrogen monoxide, chemical formula H2O. If this is the case, you could try to use the rusty shotguns in the weapon closets as clubs. Oh, and if you hear any strange noises from the ventilation shafts, don't worry, it's just Carl the Shivan; he likes to lurk in there. If you happen to cross him, just toss him your lunch and hope that it satisfies him. If it doesn’t… back away slowly, and pray fast and hard. In the event of an emergency, you can and will be used as a flotation device. The Plasma rifles in the forward locker are released only under authorization of an Admin, a :v: god, and/or hyperintelligent shade of the color blue. Oh, and whatever you do, don't irritate karajorma, no matter how good of an idea it might seem.
-
Oh jr2 you forgot to mention:
And always remember, all those who use the Roman Alphabetical characters "F" and "S" and the Arabic numeral "3" within unreasonably close proximity to eachother will be shot on site. :snipe:
Aside from that welcome! Your installer pics look awsome, and I, for one, would be glad to have something i can put on DVD and give to my freinds/family. ;)
-
... Had an idea: Turey, I wonder if you can eventually offer hip63's Installer & DVD-menu as a download... so people can make their own DVD's, without having to d'l all over again... of course, that's assuming that you guys put things in about the same places... maybe it wouldn't work, but then again, maybe...

That's basically what I was on about (Although given the core installer files I was willing to do a lot more of the work myself).
-
Heh, if this works, the guy just streamlined the whole community's work for the average player, which was the missing link for wide use.

That was the general idea :D
And yes it does work, tested on friend's PC last night ;)

Question?
When are the new mediavps due out? (best guess-timation?)
hip63 :p
-
Wow, that's very impressive. Nice work :)
Just a question though, can this entire thing be put into some sort of flash executable/installer? So that people can just download the package, and use the flash menu to install (as opposed to having a DVD or having the thing mounted on a virtual drive)?
-
Maybe ;)
I'll look into it
hip63 :p
-
So a new guy just put togeather a SCP installer\updater within his first week? Impressive.
-
Ummm you could have elaborated, "Professional looking installer"...
But yeah that was one hell of a first post!
(noticed the pics)
Iwo Jima??? Could I possibly interest you in a challenge to make Macross Island??? (need both Island physical model and then terrain mapped)... Not the city, city models are under construction.
l8trs!!!

Well such a file would be so large it wouldn't be worth it, you might as well use Turrys installer as it would be much more efficient. However I think this would be useful If you wanted to say, burn it on DVDs and give it to friends/family/doubters/people who don't have broadband internet etc...

How about we keep it on topic, eh?

Speaking of which, do anybody with access to some server space want a copy of this thing or what?
***some poor sap who could never figure out quite how to get things tweaked out right is going, "PLEEEAAASEEE" :shaking: ***
hip63 :p
-
... I have about 300 k/sec upload rates, if someone wants me to upload to their server space... um, whatever, you could even use 7-zip and make a multi-part file and put in on FileFront or something... ideas, anyone?
EDIT: I do know they were saying Shivan SPS would prolly like to get his hands on this once he's updated his installer to ver 2.0 (should be soon).
-
:bump:
zzzzzzz
-
sorry for disappearing but i've had very crazy work week
so who wants this thing? let me know where by the forum message system
hip63 :P
-
:eek2: This thing installs FS2 retail, then the SCP with latest MediaVPs, a slew of campaigns, and the Port, and does it all with an easy-to-use user interface? Wow! And it even goes on a DVD!
-
I just PM'ed ShivanSPS with a link to this thread, hopefully he'll know what to do with it..
EDIT: Also PM'ed [DW]-Hunter...
If we can get hip63, Turey, ShivanSPS, and [DW]-Hunter in here together, I'm sure we'll be able to figure something out... :D
...Was there anyone else with an installer?
-
Wow... nice work!
Can you do me a favour, whoever uploads this... could you have a version with at most 250mb parts? I have trouble downloading much larger than that; the download connection freezes...
If you use "The File Splitter" (http://www.dekabyte.com/filesplitter) you can cut the file into multiple parts and include the reconstructer EXE (very small) so people don't have to use any other install-based software.
I would really like to see both an EXE version (all zipped up tight) and a DVD-image version (ISO or BIN) (to give to friends). I would really like to give it to friends.

That could work too... I have tried to download the original Descent; Freespace images so many times; every time it craps out at about 200-300mb.

Ok, im a little busy in this days, so someone can resume for me this idea in simple steps, in a single post? Thanks.

He made a FreeSpace Open DVD. With quite a few mods in it. Includes my Installer in order to update. He can't upload it with sat internet, so he wants an address to send it to so that someone will upload it.
-
I can do that, if no-one who has more than 300 k/sec upload is willing.
Umm, @Bob-san: www.freedownloadmanager.org
Try that, see what happens. ;)
-
A little FYI here
OK, the DVD has all the goodies but, the Freespace SCP Installer files could be extracted from the ISO and they are already in 100mb chunks. Here, take a look:
So, as you see, I've got ya covered either way ;)
hip63 :P
-
BTW jr2, message me with your snail mail address (figure you don't want to broadcast it to the world here in the public forums) and I'll drop a DVD in the mail for you :)
time for this dog to hunt, LOL
hip63 :P

I still think the best way to distribute this would be via torrents.
The problem isn't that no one wants this (I want it and I already HAVE FS2_Open). It's that no one seems to have the space or bandwidth to support it.
-
I wouldn't want to go through a .torrent for this. If Shivan's installer would have taken me four weeks to download it I couldn't imagine how long this would take, I'd rather go with downloading chunks.
-
Also, you guys may wanna take a page from how some of the Flight Sim Mods sites do it, via (almost) free disk mailing.
We do it for the Fighter Squadron Game I'm involved with & they also do it over at ww2fighters.org for Jane's WWII Fighters sim, just to name a couple.
Here's how it works:
First you need some volunteers from the community who are willing to burn and ship the disks. This works best if you have volunteers in the US and Europe (and other areas is even better if it can be managed)
Then you put link, stick or whatever here at Hard Light for ordering the disks. The disks are basically free, the player simply pays a "handling fee" (usually about 2 bucks or the Euro equivelent) to cover the cost of the blank DVD disk, mail packaging and postage.
Any loose change left over could be saved up & used to support the site too :)
For those on dail up, these things are a Godsend :D
I think few would b!#ch about $2 for DVD mailed to their house. I've ordered them myself in the past :)
just an idea
hip63 :P
-
What worries me about that is that the SCP license specifically forbids making money on it. Even if we aren't making a profit, even if we ship everything at cost you still have a website taking cash in order to distribute a game we don't actually have the license for.
-
Snail Mail addy sent to hip63...
@karajorma: as for the mailing idea, I suppose you could just put up a sticky asking for volunteers. Then, tell people that when they receive the DVD, if they want to they can defray costs, and send ~$2 or whatever to the return addy they received the DVD from. Tell them to be sure and specify (in a letter, note, whatever, inside the envelope that the money is just to cover distribution costs, and that any extra is a mistake. Again, the money to cover costs would be optional, if they feel like helping. The volunteers should understand this, and realize that they may not ever get all their investment back, besides in happy FS:SCP'ers... as long as the volunteers understand this, I think that'll be alright.
Perhaps we could design a system where people post their addys to a central secure location, and volunteers can look at, and claim addresses to mail to. The address then reads as "assigned" to that volunteer. That way, three volunteers won't send to the same person.
Ideas? Comments? Flames? -err,
nvm, skip that last one..
-
How about a system where people who want the game will file their address, and people who are willing to mail it out also file their address... the closest domestic matches send out confirmation, including the mailers saying the price for the actual disc, package, postage, and case or other documentation... that way everyone has their own style; for example I could send out a DVD in a slim case, or in a CD envelope, or just the DVD itself.... charge appropriately for the package and the postage (usually a CD/DVD box).
Hows that?
-
Well how about DLing it from here?
-
Well how about DLing it from here?
Not unless some rich benefactor wants to give us a very large chunk of money to seriously upgrade the bandwidth on the site.
-
make a torrent, problem solved. duh.
-
make a torrent, problem solved. duh.
Torrents still cause large problems... example: they're slow. another example: many ISP's will ban the use of them (risk going over your bandwidth, your agreement not to use P2P file sharing, and not to be a server to other computers). a third example: it only takes one virus to infect the file and spread from one person's computer to many others.
I would rather do a FTP download or get a DVD then a Torrent...
-
...which is a more reasonable idea.
-
a third example: it only takes one virus to infect the file and spread from one person's computer to many others.
Not really. torrents incorporate hashes to prevent this, if I understand correctly.
The exact information contained in the torrent file depends on the version of the BitTorrent protocol. By convention, the name of a torrent file has the suffix .torrent. Torrent files contain an "announce" section, which specifies the URL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL) of the tracker, and an "info" section which contains (suggested) names for the files, their lengths, the piece length used, and a SHA-1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHA-1) hash code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_code) for each piece, which clients should use to verify the integrity of the data they receive.
-
Whatever... I still can't and won't use Torrents... my ISP bans being a file-host for other people (nothing against legally downloading and uploading LEGAL stuff... they just prefer that use too much bandwidth).
Anyways... why not simply host a number of disc images on SourceForge or something? It would work a lot better... well, good luck! Just don't make the only way to download VIA torrents!
-
jr2, keep an eye on that mailbox there bro ;)
Now for everyone else, I'm "borrowing" some bandwidth from work ;7
(I wonder if they will miss it  ) and I'm currently uploading 4 RAR Files
containing the ISO image to Filefront but all the uploads and links won't be
ready until tommorrow :wtf:
But Hey Part One is up already so early birds can grab it here:

let me know what you think & don't forget to vote!
Oh and fear not those of limited bandwidth, I've started up loading the FSSCP installer I made in 100mb chunks, it should be up by evening.
hip63 :p
-
@hip63: Just to let you know, I got your DVD in the mail today. I'll see if I can't do something tomorrow after work, thx.
Oh, BTW... You've uploaded to FileFront already. Where do you want me to stick this bad boy? :nervous: Of course, I'll burn copies for my friends, but if someone's got server space somewheres, just say the word... or did you want to "borrow" more bandwidth? ;)
-
Like that lavish packaging ;)
Park that puppy for d/l where ever you can :)
Work is too busy these days to do anything except for work :(
Enjoy the Disk and let me know what you think :D
hip63 :P
-
And no return address! Darn! I was hoping for someplace to lose this *nthra*.
-
what about some sort of internet ordering that people can pay for shiping exactly via internet, such as paypal, and then having the volunteers ship it? Also is there a Image CD Art that one can burn onto a DVD via lightscribe or print on a sticker or what ever people use or shall i have to make my own? ;) I'm tempted to dl it now but I think I want to wait till mediavps are updated. You say turry's updater is part of the package?
-
You say turry's updater is part of the package?
Nope. But mine is. :P
And the one included is already out-of-date.
-
Doesn't your installer, Turey, (Oh i see, I spelt your name wrong! :D) check if evreything is upto date? If not then there is little point in dling evreything right now. It seems like mvps are on the verge of another update and if the intaller wont check for the new ones when they are out, then there seems little point giving it to freinds at this moment. If there is, is that update checker built into hip63's massive installer? or is it seperate.
-
Ah, Turey's installer automatically prompts you if there is an update for itself, or for the components it installs. :D
-
Ah, Turey's installer automatically prompts you if there is an update for itself, or for the components it installs :D
Yep, the whole idea was to make easy for anybody (read - newbies ;)) get the base game installed and working with little effort and then it can be updated (via the updater) as new stuff comes out or items get updated :)
hip63 :P
-
Great then I will dl it and pass it around. :D Now what would be realy nice if this one installer DVD could work with all operating systems. ;)
-
Now what would be realy nice if this one installer DVD could work with all operating systems.
should work with all Windoze OS's (including vista) but I dunno about linux tho.
if some one could test it on linux and let me know, I may be able to tweak it if needed to work on linux. :)
hip63 :P

What about the mac users? we cant leave them out in the blue now can we, and leave all of taylors hard work?
-
i thought MAC recently (somewhat) became compatible with windows programs. why else would they put it on TV for weeks on end saying they can?
-
No, Macs can just multi-boot Windows now. So if you want to fork over $$$.$$ for WXP, then yeah, but you still have to restart into Windows.
-
well not all of us have intel macs. I for one have a nice trusty G5 downstairs that I use for alot of stuff.
On another hand I was wondering but was to lazy to check. Did the fsport in this installer include some of they hi-poly fighters like the new apollo and athena bommer?
-
I think so... not sure if the Apollo made it... (I hope so). Ask Gooby.

EDIT: Broken torrents removed, here's the fixed ones:

My first torrent... :nervous: I do wonder how to make it so my computer doesn't have to be connected all the time... I use Azureus, latest version. I told Azureus to create hashes for other platforms, too, but I don't know how to use them. Help, anyone? Tell me how to do this right. I do hope its working now, but I want links in other torrent sites, as well, and it would be nice to be able to shut off my computer without wondering which poor fellow fanboy I just toasted.
-
I don't use gnutella, but that torrent is worthless. You confused a search engine with a tracker.
Here's how to do it:
1. Choose your tracker.
2. Make the torrent, including the tracker announce info.
3. Make sure you have lots of people to help seed.
4. Upload the torrent to the tracker.
5. Immediately get all your seeding friends to join.
6. Once well established, upload the torrent to some search engines.
7. Keep seeding.
You only did the second half of step 6, and you blew all the rest.
I wouldn't 7zip it either, just leave it as an iso. Otherwise anybody that does have the iso will be unable to join your torrent.
The torrent should include a nice readme file with instructions, links, and contents of the iso.
One free tracker is The Pirate Bay. I use Demonoid. PM me if you want. :)
-
Hmm.. I will have to set that up.. Might take me awhile, I need some sleep first. Thx, Huggybaby.
-
Update... The torrent I originally started (.7z) is still going.. I have two peers, have uploaded 200 Mb, but the dumb thing has stalled. I've got plenty of connection, but nothing's happening. BTW, Huggybaby, speaking of the .iso... can you post a hash (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jacksum/) for that? I made my own .iso with the DVD hip63 sent me. If we are gonna make a torrent, we all need the same file.
EDIT: Found a better summer, updated link

Update: .7z torrent running now, uploaded 1.85 gigs, 3(5) peers connected... up speed ~110 k/sec..
EDIT: 3.81 gigs now,
@Huggybaby, I found a some very good plugins for Azureus... Under Plugins > Installation Wizard...
, take a look at the description for Team Seeder
I also got:
3D View
Advanced Statistics
Chat
Focus
SafePeer
-
Cool, you have a tracker now. (Unless I missed it before?)
-
Heck, I dunno... I tried a couple times to get a tracker, but anyways... did you see the plugins I mentioned? Especially the Team Seeder one?
-
No, I only see one 7zip file in the torrent.
Unless you're talking about something Azureus related, and I don't use that program.
-
Ya, that's Azureus related... lets you start seeding the same file when there's a peer for it, and not when there's not. BTW, the darn 7-zip file is broke.
I'm gonna make a new one with just the .iso and instructions.
EDIT: here (http://isohunt.com/release/85403)
and here (http://www.torrentbox.com/torrent_details?id=95670&uploaded=1).
OK?

Invalid URL in tracker, and the isohunt link has no torrent uploaded, and a bad link to the nfo file.
What's going on there bubba?
On the plus side, my iso matches yours 99%.

:wtf: I am seriously messing something up. When I get back from work tomorrow (this morning), I'll have to check that out. The difference in the iso is prolly just because I used a different program (unofficial Windows Power Toy)
-
On the plus side, my iso matches yours 99%.
As I said on the other thread generating parity files might be a more sensible way of handling this over forcing everyone to redownload.
-
Already delete, soz :(
-
Huggybaby might be able to generate working copies if his file is that close to yours. And it's a lot easier to download 40MB of parity files to fix the 1% difference than it is to download the whole thing again.
-
karajorma, parity files are used on irc where files are split up into small chunks, then scattered over different fora to be reassembled later. Torrents contain the entire file in one place so that strategy isn't needed.
In fact I've never seen one torrent that used them, not that they couldn't---they're simply a complication of usenet life.
It's almost unheard of for someone to download a broken torrent. Most people would not download a torrent that had no seeders or leechers.
If I make parity files, he'll have to download some pieces again from somewhere, I'm not sure how that would work.
jr2, a 99% match is fine. Anyway, whatever you use to make the torrent is going to hash the file, not a Power Toy.
-
Err... no, the problem was, my .7z file (and thus the source) was broken.. and someone had already downloaded it. (Actually, about 3 ppl..) Although I did still have the source for that file (the .iso). What karajorma was referring to would have allowed me to send a "fix" for ppl who downloaded my broken file.. and a relatively small fix, at that.
Oh, BTW.. The Power Toy created the .iso file. Your program (Nero? Easy CD Creator? Roxio?) created your .iso
-
I think I fixed the .torrent file not uploaded - it was not associated with the release for some reason, now it is. As for the .nfo file, I've tried everything I can think of... every time I upload to a free host, it gets deleted, and my homepage (geocities) says "invalid filename", even though there are no spaces in the name. Where do you put .nfo files? Of course, there's one in the torrent, but I was looking for a place to stick them externally. Huggybaby, you need to get IRC.. :D Google Miranda IM, get that, then hook up to esper.net , channel hard-light
-

Umm, no...I downloaded hip63's iso, I didn't create it. µTorrent hashed it.
I can chat with you on AIM or something, I don't use IRC unless it's an emergency.
-
That'd be nice... my AIM is in my profile
-
jr2's pretty much explained it. The files were corrupt at source. It's either parity or force the users to download all 4BG again.
-

Good job jr2, I see it's all working now!
PS You're gonna have to seed more than that, I'm the only guy seeding right now.
-
:p No you're not... you just don't know about Azureus' "Super Seeding" mode. ;7
-
Dude...I INVENTED that mode.
BTW, super seeding is only good if you're the ONLY seeder, and IF you have LOTS of leechers. Since you're not and you don't, you should switch back to normal mode.
-
Oh, fine.. I thought you didn't use Azureus though?
EDIT: Check ur PMs...
-
I use µTorrent. Any decent client has that mode though...
I'll be aiming you in a sec...
-
Azureus? Plz enlighten me about it!

You will also need Java JRE (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/getjre.html)

That name reminds me Azzurro. Good to know.

Here is what I don't understand. The DVD is windows, the installer and all the files on it are windows. Then why Does the installer install the file Freespace2OSX.dmg? Any mac users would never be able to get at it.

DVDs SHOULD be cross-platform. The Open Installer/Updater is cross-platform. I don't know about hip63's DVD Installer, but I'd assume that it's win only. Running the Updater will install the .dmg only if you ask for it.
-
well it IS installed with Hip63's windows installer. LOL
In any case i noticed that the Apollo he included with the installer must be the old one as the red.tga glows don't work. if you go to the middle of this page you will find a vp where they do work. http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,35943.150.html
Perhaps Turry you should include this in the update installer for it to be replaced.
EDIT I could be wrong, but i think it has higer res map too then the first one included.
-
Hmm,
@Huggybaby: When should I stop seeding? My automatic settings stopped me, now I'm using "Forced Seeding"... I have 6 Seeds, 11 Peers... I'm uploading at about 5 - 10 KB / sec, have been for awhile... I'm not slowing it down, am I? Should I allow it to just sit in Queue?
-
"When should I stop seeding?" That's completely up to you. With 6 seeds and 11 peers, any downloaders would appreciate all the seeders they can get.
"I'm uploading at about 5 - 10 KB / sec, have been for awhile" If your settings are correct, and that is your only active torrent, you should be able to upload at the maximum speed of your connection.
"I'm not slowing it down, am I?" I'm not sure what you mean by "it". If you're talking about the swarm, it's impossible to slow the swarm by participating in any way. If you mean your individual connection, that depends on your Azureaus settings and whether you're uploading or downloading any other torrents at the same time.
"Should I allow it to just sit in Queue?" What's in the queue doesn't affect anything.
-
I've been seeding at ~100 K/sec, now 5-10 K/sec... :wtf: ?
I want to keep seeding until the swarm is quite large and fast...
I meant the swarm being slowed down, thx for the answer. :D
Allowing it to sit in Queue was just me wondering if I was slowing the swarm down, and should wait until it needed me again.
Ah, uploading at 50 K/sec now, much better... but still not 100.
EDIT: For some reason, its now uploading at 110 K/sec, I'm happy now... I guess torrents sometimes take a dip in speed like this, and its normal, huh?
-
The way torrents work is that leechers will always download from the fastest combination of seeders. It depends on the upload speed of each seeder, as well as their distance from any leecher.
If you are seeding, there is no way you can slow down the swarm, you can only contribute to it. What probably is happening is that some guy (or guys) at a university somewhere is going on and offline. He/they have what we call a "fat pipe", so they can seed at an extremely high rate of speed (fiber optic?), much faster than us home users. When they are online, count your blessings! They can seed so much faster with their high speed connection than you can, that they naturally contribute to most of the flow, reducing your contribution---this is a good thing! When they go offline, that leaves the rest of us to take up the slack, and that's when you see your upload speed take a jump.
With the current state of affairs, be glad when your upload drops---but keep seeding. Ideally, there will be at least four times as many seeders as leechers, but a couple of fat pipes can change the equation. Ratios aside, what we're shooting for is that each downloader can download at their maximum speed. As a rule of thumb, there should be more seeders than leechers.
It's simple, but confuses me the more I read my explanation, so I'll stop now.
-
I understand. Thx much. :D

If you guys ever did want to start mailing people a copy, the simple answer is -- the person who wants the DVD burned for them sends a blank DVD to a certain address along with a SASE back to whereever they want it sent.
That way, no money is exchanged at all. The game is just given away, as it is here on the internet. As long as someone is willing to do the burning, it's simply a matter of receiving mail and then dropping it in the mailbox. Doesn't violate the license.

DVD would have to be in a sturdy case to survive the trip. Other than that, no real objections.
-
Ive discovered some cd jewlcase inserts art work in the DVD extras. They only need to be resized horizantaly/vertically inorder to actualy fit in a jewlcase. I did it myself and turned out real nice on photo paper; though, regular paper will do nicely, though not as thick.
The measurements I found that were required to fit in a jewlcase were.
Back: (WxH) 15.00x11.73cm
Front: (WxH) 12.11x12.02cm

Yeah, definitely. But the person interested is sending not only the original mailer, but the return mailer as well, so it's up to them. At a CVS or a Walgreens they always have envelopes that are yellow on the outside and have bubble-wrap on the inside. That would probably work absent a dvd or jewel case, and keep the cost to just two or three stamps.
-
Yeah, they should... I've received quite a few discs that way.
-
That's how they distributed the final Smashing Pumpkins CD when the record label wouldn't put it out during my junior year of college in 2000. (I'm dating myself here).
-
So, hip63, when are you putting the BtRL demo on your DVD? :p
-
Yeah, when the new mediavps come out, we'll need a new installer & DVD so BtRL should make it, disk spacee withstanding.
hip63 :p
-
...three years is a long time to wait.
j/k
-
Oh, and before I forget... a few improvements (IMHO) for the Installer:
Put the setup executable in the main directory and call it setup.exe - meh, I dunno. Just a though; alot of installers do that. I suppose it's not really necessary.
Also, make the music loop. :p
EDIT: I forgot... ::) install fsport to fsport, not theportv3 or whatever it was... otherwise, Turey's Installer d'ls the whole thing again. ;)
jr2 ;)
-
Sorry for the necromanced thread (partially this is a bump incase someone who didndn't see it before wanted to look at it as it is pretty cool) but is this going to be updated for the latest stuff? e.g. BTRL and B5 final (when that is released) also the fixes Jr2 mentioned would be nice.
-
The 1.01 patch has the goods. (In my siggy.) hip63, can you update post 1 with the links for the 1.01 patch?
-
Talk about strangers bearing gifts. Welcome to the forums Hip63 :D
-
Well I ment a patch for the installer itself so we could start creating newer DVD's with all the latest stuff. But for now I think Ill try to put this patch in the extras folder. Ah wont let me add more data on to DVD's what a shame
-
Eh, we're waiting for v2.0 to come out, and that's waiting for FS:SCP v 3.6.10... ;)
