Title: Teachers and students
Post by: ShadowWolf_IH on August 16, 2002, 11:02:45 pm
ok, here's my idea.

We have classes.  Classes on texturing, modelling, visual conceptualization between the races.  Anything that is FS.  I mean a class with some one willing to teach, and people willing to learn.  This could all be done in a chat room, i can make these, even though the full time chats got shot down.

So first we go through the poll and see if anyone is even interested in this concept.  you can choose more than one option.

i'll build em if you'll use em, i just want to give something back.

I would ove to learn MODing one on one, but the various tutorials are the same thing, and most of the MODers in the community are busy, and this would take away from other projects that are more important.

AP is kinda dead in the water, and I wouldn't mind helping a few newbies through basic truespace steps...the only problem is that I have no instant messangers that are allowed on dad's network ( )

I still would be happy to teach...especially if someone else could teach me the finer parts of pof editing...

I dont think chat is the best way to handle the main bulk of what need to be learned, it would be better for clearing up problems and advanced stuff.

A well thought out collection of web pages with tested tutorials would be a cool thing (if it doesnt already exist).

Well, as far as a well thought-out tutorial (Warning, PIMPCON LEVEL 4!), I've put a good many days into this one (http://www.brainzipper.com/fs2/rhino_fs2/) for modelling in Rhino3D and converting said model into trueSpace and FreeSpace.

And now, our first lesson comes to us by way of an example of what not to do:

Here we have a dialog box with sharp borders between colors (the text) and no smooth color gradations except for the title bar, which is near-negligable.

Now,while JPG's are good for photos and photo-realistic renders - basically, anything that simulates the look of "reality", it is far from the best format to use for images such as this, or cartoon-like illustrations. As you can see, this image, currently a JPEG, has noticable image noise around the text and sharp-edged illustration. For such images, use GIFs.

That has been your lesson for today, kids! I hope you learned something. If you want to know the why, lemme know and I'll write something up. :)

Oh, and Vadar: thanks for the example - it was good timing (and quite hilarious, I might add... ).

What, including the image in my quote? It was being actively used as an example.

I think there should be a dedicated forum for this, I would help out except that I really dont have any time with RL being as hectic as it is...

ok, so we have unknown being willing to teach......there were others who said they would be as well......in the poll, but i have no idea who you are.  unknown, how do you think we should set this up?

I could also teach table hacking.

EDIT:Though almost everything except the ships and weapons tables are self explanatory. Even the ships and weapons are, they are just a little harder to figure out.

Lol. I wrote the HLPBB Movie, and I'm the tabler for the Robotech MOD (among other things) and the tabler/modder for Mind Games, or used to be, I think.

noooo unknown, you misunderstand....i know who you are....but by the poll others said they would be willing to teach, i was wondering who they are.  they answered yes to the poll, but then didn't give an affirmative reply except in a few instances.

:wtf:? OK, don't know what you're asking, so: I'm willing to teach tabeling, so I voted for teaching :D How's that? ICQ would be nice.
Title: Teachers and students
Post by: penguin on August 20, 2002, 10:52:35 am
I didn't vote 'cause I want both

I can't model, maybe it's a left brain/right brain thing.  Maybe I could learn :doubt:

Um, I can program pretty well, though.  Don't think I could teach this online, but I could answer questions about the source code, assuming I could find the answers :)  Actually, learning how to find the answers yourself is an extremely valuable lesson...

i do have a source code question for you penguin.
About a month ago there was a thread about planetary mods.  Basically, space combat, atmpshperic combat, and ground combat.  you said we would need 3 engines to pull this off.  I got one, but when i got no reply as to whether or not you wanted me to keep looking, i stopped looking for the other.  We you thinking of doing it, or just telling us what we would need?

and by the way, you can vote more than one item in this poll.

Mostly the latter, sorry :)

To be honest, I think that would be a whole new game, or at least a branch ("fs2_open: total combat" :)) that would be separate from what most of us are doing with the "space sim" part.  Obviously anyone who wants to work on such a thing is welcome to do so, and can use any code from the fs2_open project.

It's not that I have no interest in doing it, there are just other things I would rather work on, and I've got limited time what with work, family, and all those other RL™ things...

Title: teaching and learning
Post by: The Refugee on August 20, 2002, 09:28:35 pm
I owe shadow. I only have fs1, but he taught me how to input the herc mk2 into fs1. once i got that working i also put in the aeoles the rakshasa the persius...........too many to mention.

he is currently teaching me how to input the fs2 weaps.

i would teach and learn but i voted for LEARN. i could teach tbling but what i really want to learn is how to make my own wireframe and ships.

if any of you could help me do that i would gladly teach tbling and skinning im good at that to so count me in for teach and learn

AND whoever said ignore shadows ideas deserves to get a subach hl-7 shoved up there a** and for shadow to pull the trigger;7

refugee sometimes you have to learn to ignore people, i think we have a mutual agreement on the ignoring thing.  but thanks for the vote of confidence.  do you texture, or retexture?

i could learn heaps, practice and then teach :D

so far i can build models, do some intermediet texturing on  them, pof them and do intermediet tbl hacking. bit rusty on the fredding though, and need to figure out unwrapping.

A word to the wise. Posting the same thing on different threads doesn`t make it more likely that people will help you. In fact it has quite the reverse effect as it annoys people and makes it less likely that they will help you.

I figured that might be a possibility later. For reference try the edit button. I`ve never tried it but on some boards you can delete as long as no one has replied.
Even if you can`t a simple edit to say that you  made a mistake looks a lot better :)
