I just got 2 GB of PC133 RAM, and I am running XP Pro SP3RC1. Can I run without the pagefile? My pagefile is currently set a 4 GB.

Also I got a new 3 Ghz P4 HT! Woo!

Turning off your pagefile if you have 2 gigs of physical RAM is something I do, because it forces windows to use the physical RAM instead of the pagefile, which results in increased speed, unless you happen to be running something that sucks up more then 1.5 gigs of RAM, in which case you should turn on the pagefile. But the pagefile is not, in any sense of the word, a necessity; It will just help if your low on RAM.

Yes. You do not need the pagefile unless you find yourself actually using almost all of your RAM. This usually won't happen unless your playing something like HL2 on full graphics. FS2 shouldn't use up anywhere near 2 gigs of RAM. You can check your RAM usage with the task manager.

Playing FS2 wouldn't require 2 gigs of RAM, nor, surprisingly, does Crysis. HL2 just sucks with memory management. However, saying that you should never turn your pagefile off unless it becomes corrupted is just plain wrong. You should turn off your page file if you don't need the extra RAM because it gives you a speed boost.

Just out of curiosity, how the hell does a pagefile become corrupt?  AFAIK, it's only memory swap data.

I have no real use for my page file either, but I still keep it on.  What I did was alter the DisablePagingExecutive registry key.  If you change it to a value of 1, it will cause Windows to load into the physical memory, not the page file.  This way, you can still get a speed boost, but you still keep the redundancy of having the page file, just in case.

There is at least one use for the swap file in my experience.
If a task goes havoc eating all available ram, then, due to the slowness of swap, you may have a chance to stop it before the whole system collapses..
