Just wondering  . . . . one sort of obstacle I think for drawing in new players is that many new campaigns require the person to own FS2. Now, if someone wanted to create a MOD which did not require FS2 what exactly would be required? Basically everything except the code??? So . . . new ships, sounds, music, interface, head_anis, HUD, and all that other stuff????

      But . . for download purposes, are the MediaVPs for example considered non-legal for distribution? Or does it not qualify because most everything's been redone. Not sure if Interplay would hold the rights to the images, or the models/textures themselves.

      It's a bit of a hurdle, that's all, to introduce new players, if they'd have to download some ripped copy of FS2 first before they could play a new MOD.

       So just wondering if a person distributes a self-contained MOD/installer what would have to be omitted to be considered legally legit sorta thing.

I'd deem everything in MediaVPs as non-retail FS2 material. Which would make it perfectly legal to distribute them. And, as we concurred, the game engine is open source so nothing wrong in distributing it either. The interface, on the other hand, should be redone, if one wants to legally share it with others.

But I don't see what's the point in this whole mess. Turey's Installer already provides a... *cough* "copy for a friend", so that a new player can get everything necessary with one installer. And even if it's a bit "wrong", we just need to be like "Shh" 'n stuff, so that Interplay won't get too mad and start suing people.

I still think the interface should be redone in a more generic Windows-based fashion, like Half Life 2's thing. That way, multiple mods can be standalone without having to redo zillions of files.

plus, the thing that made this all get started, that little thing in the copywrite.  It says something like "you may make copies of this disc for your friends". I think there's a picture that highlights that key part.

         Yeah, well . . . there's a stickied thread around here that talks about the EULA (End User License Agreement). Regardless, if I were to ever release a major MOD like that I'd want to know whether it was completely legit or not. And by legit I mean no Gray areas. Warez hosting isn't really my forte. But anyway, I'm not looking to spark any EULA discussion so please everyone don't bother.
