with the introduction of sexps that allow a mission to end with a trip to the docking bay, we need a really cool ils gauge (iluminated landing system).

the best idea for this is a 3d gauge, similar to the subspace node. it should have a bunch of rings that create a tunnel that iluminates a path to the bay. when all goals are complete the ils will activate automaticly. and instructs you to whatever docking point you will land at, by staying in the tunnel and flying twards the docking point you automaticly end the mission.

Actually, it's Instrument Landing System, but meh...
What I'd rather see is a system whereby when you enter the approach to a hanger (and you are in docking mode or something), your autopilot kicks in and lands you. Thus, you don't look too out of place when your mates are flying perfect formations down an Orion's runway, with you hand-brake turning it in to the hanger at the last moment...

Actually, a combination of both could be really cool.  Like, you have a beacon-like ring appear for the approach to the docking bay, (perhaps normal to the first leg of the dock path at the end point or something) that activates an external camera/locked control sequence and turns your ship automated for the approach to the destroyer.  Then you would watch as your fighter comes in to a docking bay on approach.
who needs a signature? ;)
It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

Have you ever seen AI ships landing in a hangar bay? From what I've seen, they don't bother to fly in formation or even make sure that their orientation matches the destroyer's. They will try and follow the bay paths, but that's about it. I do think an "autopilot" type thing could be possible (via using a modified version of the subspace code) but getting it exactly right would take some work, both on the coding end and on the MODding end. I think that "ring" suggestion further up, which actually sounds like something out of the old ST:TNG NES game, would be a bit much to try and add to the FS2 engine and wouldn't, IMHO, add anything to the fun of playing it. Realistically, as long as your orientation matches the destroyer's and you're not going too fast, it shouldn't matter very much how you get to and inside a hangar. (Unless you're trying to avoid running into other ships doing the same thing.)

PS In the aviation world ILS means Instrument Landing System and may be used for planes flying under the IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) rather then the VFR. (Visual Flight Rules)

Docking I suggest something like what they have in the game HardWar. since Spaceports won't allow off site images click here to see what I mean.
I have big plans, now if only I could see them through.

I... think so... of course, we've all seen them launch in formation. You mean they don't land in formation? I'll have to try it and see...

I play Flight Unlimited II, which has ILS capable airports and planes. It's also got the best audio ATC system I know of, with the possible exception of Flight Unlimited III which I've yet to play. :)

Anyone ever played X-Plane? You can fly just about any aircraft ever, including the X1 and X15 ;7

You can even fly on a NASA-perfect rendition of Mars, except of course your control surfaces have zero effect in the martian atmosphere :D

I tried. I found and downloaded a 128 MB file from CNet that's supposedly a trial version of X-Plane 6.50. It downloaded and "installed" right (if you can call a running a self extracting zip file installing it) but when run the text, running in 1024x768 resolution, is pretty much unreadable. (I can make out "English" in the first menu and "3D-card" on the following screen, but nothing else.) The program also doesn't seem to quit when Alt+F4 is used. (The program seems to quit but still shows up in the Ctrl+Alt+Delete task list.) Doesn't seem to be all that professionally made so far. (Heck, even my the shareware programs I made have an actual installer.)

installers suck, i miss the old days of typing "copy *.* c:\wherever" to install a program.
