Why is it called "toothpaste" and not "teethpaste"?

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I suppose in the same way that nail varnish isn't nails-varnish, and boot polish isn't boots-polish.

English is possibly the most inconsistency-riddled language in the world. ;)

Well, the only other language I know is Cantonese, which is as straight-laced as it comes - if you can hear the accents (best learnt at a young age, even people who devote years to it in future life can't get all the nuances), you won't mistake anything for anything. :p English, though, that's a terror to learn... things which don't sound the same, things which sound the same but shouldn't, things which mean different depending on... well, are you willing to put up a challenger? ;)

Nah, I knew how to speak English since I was 8 years old. Somehow it was very easy for me to learn.

deifintively:
French ( altho dutch is probably not much better ).
From all the latin based languages, trust me, english is really the simplest, less oddity ridden one.

True. There's no gender in English, which makes it much simpler (I think). Although there are lots of words which mean more than one thing, and many words which can be used to mean the same thing. If you want a really evil language, try Welsh. ;7

Growing up in it is quite a different matter - children have a remarkable ability to learn language. Maybe it's coming to English from Chinese thought processes... I still maintain English is a butt to learn. :p

I never really "learned" it. I just knew... for some reason. Maybe I watched a bit too much television :drevil:

w/o counting the fact the in french verbs are way more complicated to... her to do that:

doing:
I do
you do
he does
you do
we do
they do

faire:
je fais,
tu fais
il fait
nous faisons
vous faites
ils font

and that's just for present tense, you'd choke yourself if I were to show you the "plusqueparfait au subjectif" tense of faire :D
