i am working on a school project, designing a kitchen.

i'm doing that in TS5.1, and i want to play around with lighting and stuff, now i am a complete TS noob, and i am looking for some basic answers. if anyone can help out, i'd be very happy.

i want to make a sun, following a path, so i can make an animation with the light changing from morning to afternoon. what kind of light do i need?
how do i make a path round and large enough to really play sun?

how long will the rendering take if i make a +- 10 minute animation with the moving sun, a complete kitchen (no content in the cupboards, just doors opening and closing, camera moving, and some things getting highlighted) at 640*480 and 15 FPS?

how do i get a good wood texture? i tried the TS standard texes, but i can't get them scaled right. i am using one meter=one TS unit figured it out myself.

is glass needed to make the windows look semi good?

another q:

is there a TS for linux?

how do i free up more RAM easily?

how much free RAM is needed (win98SE, 192MBSDRAM)?

Lets see what I can do...

I would say to use a local light, because it's really easy to add lense flares to them. I never got the flares to work with inflights or other types of lights. As for the size of the path, it's not the size that counts, it only really needs to go around the "kitchen". Beyond that, I'd say start playing with a flashlight and some cardboard, and scale from there.

how long will the rendering take if i make a +- 10 minute animation with the moving sun, a complete kitchen (no content in the cupboards, just doors opening and closing, camera moving, and some things getting highlighted) at 640*480 and 15 FPS?

for ****ing ever. Or at least in my experience. I'd chop your resolution down to about half that & blow it up on your presentation or whatever[/color]

Good for you.

I'd say it'd be a good idea

Nope

ctrl+alt+del. Kill anything that doesn't look official, and even some of those. Also, try increasing your paging file size

how much free RAM is needed (win98SE, 192MBSDRAM)?

That _should_ be enough.

I have TS5 too, but I still don't know how to add backgrounds, or laser fire.
IN Ts, NOT in photoshop, because I want to make an animation, withouth having to edit frame by frame.

er...you do know what an infinite light is, right? it wouldn't make sense to let it have a lense flare, because the arrow thing that represents the light isn't actually were the light is. the real light is infinitely far away.

ok, let's say i don't need lensflares, because i won't be looking into the sun directly, what kind of colour value's are any good?

edit: nearly forgot, thanks a lot for your help, some if it is really going to be usefull.

btw, how do i make glass?

For color values, I'd either use a straight white, or a slight yellow tint.

Glass is made through the transparency shader. Right click on it...IIRC one is glass

in that case, you want to use an infinite light, and make it rotate slowly. the color should change depending on the time of day. early morning should be yellowish, noon should be white with a very small hint of yellow, afternoon should be yellowish, and evening should be orangish.

glass is made using the glass reflectance shader. do not use transparency, as this will make the glass...well...bad.

glass shader properties:

specularity/roughness: 1
shininess: 1
reflection: 0.2
transmission: 0.95
refraction: 1.6

color:

r 255 g 255 b 255

thank you, i'll try that out tommorow.

they just took 4 tubes of blood for testing, and that makes me unable to stand upright for longer then half a minute.

Try donating blood to a blood bank. They take a pint.

i know, but since i nearly passed out this time, i doubt i'll donate any time soon.

FYI, it wasn't from the needle, just after they took the blood, and the needle was out, my ears started buzzing, my vision went black, and the nurse told me to put my head between my legs.

suffice to say, im not really happy walking right now.

You looked to be a pretty small guy, so I guess it would affect it more than it would me, a pint doesnt even do that to me. I'm 6'4" 200lbs...
I just get light headed and hallucinate...
As for the cabinets, I would suggest putting some knots in the wood... if TS supports multiple layers for textures it shouldnt be a problem....

well, i think i'll end up using a paint or something because i can;t get it scaled right, but i'll play around.

I'm 6ft2 (1,85M) and 57KG and assuming 1Kg is 2,2lbs 125.6lbs.

but hypoglycemia and being ill doesn't help

HOW TO FREE RAM EASILY:

FreeRAM XP Pro v1.4

Its a pretty sweet RAM "optimization" program.  Its FREE! :) It runs in any version of windows (dont let the "XP" in the name fool you).  I have it running on XP, 95, 98 and 2000 machines.  I use this on all my computers/laptop; friend/family computers and any computer I get my hands on.

Download Here
It is "free" but if you like it drop the poor guy who wrote it $5

Hope it was what you were looking for!

is there any way to apply a bump map to a single face and not the entire object?

i am playing around with the glass, but it won't render transparent, whatever i try, it renders as a solid white plain. every transperancy slider i can find is at it's max, but still, it renders solid white.

use the "paint face" tool. it looks like a paint brush.

step 1: follow my glass instructions to the letter.

step 2: enable ray tracing. right click on the button that you press to render and a panel with buttons appears. click the one that says "raytracing".
