A-10 Thunderbolt Model (big images)
A-10 Thunderbolt, modelled in Rhino and textured with truespace.

Basic views.  This is the first model I've properly textured. Typically I prefer just to model details, but that doesnt lend itself well to rendering in truespace. This aircraft is quite easy, most of the texturing is just generic panelling.

My own photo of the sun.

Valley created using Teragen. Tried to motion blur it but it was quite tricky.

Again, I photographed the background. The engine texture is made from an actual set of fan blades i modeled and rendered.

A bit better with Teragen here, and a nice bonus shadow.

I'm going to add some weapons (and a pilot!) for a few more action shot oppertunities ( = explosions);7

Looks pretty good. You mesh is funky at some of the noses and stuff it looks like, though.

And I wanna see geometry-modeled, poseable flaps. And full landing gear. :p

IIRC, the Avenger cannon is slightly off center.. to the left i think..

Yes, but the last time i modeled that much detail on an aircraft, it was 220k polys ( link to image). I'll be able to cut down on that (for sure) in this model, there's less wheels, and the flaps are less complicated.
Suppose I'll have to give it a go then.

220K? That's it?

Sheesh. Guess I gotta get Rhino. 220,000 is, like, one missile in MAX.

looks pretty cool, I'd just make the canopy rounder, coz it's kind of pointy right now.

See, I was thinking that 220K polys was rather high for the model.

Looks great though, BeatsPete.

U.S. planes aren't in camo unless they're in a jungle enviroment. They're usually just bare metal. It's a practice started in WWII to reduce friendly fire casualties.

Try this one.

The one you got looks like a prototype or something.

The officail name is the A-10 Thunderbolt, but its refered to as the Warthog too.

Anyway, L.E. slats, rudders, elevators and aelerons are added. Flaps are harder - you need to make an aerofoil shape that could slide into the back section of another aerofoil - but atleast they are on a straight wing.
Might finish of the landing gear later today.

Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

What I am trying to point out is not so much that the A-10 model you have has a incorrectly positioned gun, but that the gun needs to be BIGGER and a little higher up on the plane.

yes that gun on an a10 is quite a devastating thing, it can rip open tanks. looks a little malnutritioned in ur model. and a10s are green by default cos theyre low flying planes.

"Why Warthog, sir?" ;)

I really like the work you're doing here beatspete, I love that you're putting time into presentation - nice sky photos and Terragen efforts there. :)

Many photos:

Things to note:
  • Atleast half of these aircraft are grey.
  • The gun isn't that huge.
  • The gun is to the left - i'll change this.
The basic shape and sizes came from technical views of the aircraft.  I set these as the background image in rhino and traced the outline's, so the scales of the model should be pretty accurate, including the gun.

Corsair: Maybe - but I'll have to be sure I'm properly finished with it.

New additions: Flaps, LE slats, aelerons, elevators, rudders, landing gear (compromising on some detail in the name of poly count), assorted missles and bombs, pointy thing on the wing, a new gun (slightly to the left[i/]), and a crappy pilot.

The render mesh in the above images is 127,000 polys.  I'll hack this down to something i could put into truespace, and texture it again (with improved textures).
