I see you didn't play System Shock 2 yet, so I won't throw any spoilers your way... all I can say is - get the game as soon as possible. You might find it... [glow=green]amusing, insect...[/glow]

Excuse me. *cough*

Seriously, it might be a 1999 but it's well worth the buy. If you liked games like Deus Ex or the Thief serial, you'll love it... if not, try it anyway, you never know.

and I have system shock 2, but I haven't had the time to play more than just the very beginning. so I know some of what it's about anyway.

Well, yes... FS2 was, like System Shock 2, one of the most underrated games ever. Except System Shock, at least to my knowledge, never had the chance to reach a level as high as FS did with HLP. The "1999" comment was there for anyone who might filter it out because of the "ugly, un-UT2004" rendering.

As for SS2, you might want to reinstall it and grab the patch along. The beginning might be a bit slow, but once you get that firsrt keycard and enter central Deck 2... well, let's just say, don't play it at night. Even after finishing it three times it still gives me a nasty shock whenever I hear something around the corner. :sigh:

I know what you mean.

You can get the game from Underdog, with no cutscenes but everything else included, but there are virtually no load times. I myself LOVE to play LAN parties with folks or connect IP's with a friend of mine, and we us AOL Phone Chat to talk to eachother, via headsets. You just dont HAVE the time to type in a message when you say,

"OMG! ITS TEH RUMBLER! **** **** ****!" *loads Anti-Personel bullets*

Ya see what I mean?

Eh... I wouldn't advise getting it from Underdogs. For one, SS2 isn't abandonware yet, and no cutscenes (the intro and outro) means skipping a lot of the story. And both those animations just plain own. :D

So, you say LAN works well? I guess I'll have to try it, 'course we probably won't need phone chat 'cause we'll be stacked in a single room. Which player setup did you usually use? Marine + Techie + OSA or some other combo?
A Seth is a terrible thing to waste. The reverse applies for Shivans.

LAN works fine but be sure to make occasional quick saves as the game sometimes just quits more or less.
But else than that it's very nice :)
I always play the teckie with the hacking skill and some other usefull skills :D
It's extremely fun to play with 3 other friends for a couple of all nighters.
Great scary moments and great fun :D

check out the Shivan manifesto thread in the General Freespace section :p
it got a little out of hand there

Yeah, it did. BTW, did you guys see the "System Shock Rebirth" MOD for SS2, where they upgraded the models EXTREMELY well, and I mean freakishly scary. I actually had to go to the bathroom when I got on the game, and then nearly pissed my pants when I saw the hybrid for the first time.

Ill give ya a link.

But Im not sure if its LAN compatable, because there is some tinkering you need to do. But as for the link:

make sure you have a nice sound system, and crank it up a little bit, and play it at night, and I can guarantee that you are in for a scare ;)

Someone is also working on a mod to upgrade all the object textures in SS2 (doors, lifts, signs, gadgets, etc).

These shots won't be too impressive unless you're already familiar with SS2--

MM... pretty... and the Rebirth MOD is not completed, so, I suppose this will REALLY do until then. Now I want to play System Shock 2 all over again as the Navy Officer. Kick-ass!

As for the rest of you, go out and find it, because I guarentee it kicks your ass!

Yeah, Rebirth mode isn't done yet, but from what I can tell the project's effectively been put on ice. I did manage to download the thing, though, I'll put it on trial tonight  :D

ZylonBane - got that package as well, looks likee another Czech fan team... From what I can tell, those two mods are compatible, so I think I'll just dump both in the folder and try ;)
They should both be LAN compatible, as long as (yadda-yadda-yadda...) all machines have the same files.

edit: ...and after some reading, I found your SHTUP project as well. Unfortunately, the link to it won't work. Any ETA on that?

Well, after seeing the mod on TTLG, the author's name looked somehow familiar :nervous:

BTW, I meant the donwload link, not the thread itself, unless the Czech site already has them merged at the moment.

It's gonna be a LONG, downloading night :sigh:

The Czech site doesn't have the most recent version. The most recent version is linked to in the thread I linked to above.

As for the maker of Rebirth, the developer has been drafted by the people making Arx Fatalis 2, which is an RPG kinda like Morrowind. I got to talk with him and the staff on the forums before they went dead.

Whoops. I guess I'll have to fix that.
