Car ----- 92,000 miles. 1974. should i get it?
someone i know is selling a 1974 cadillac coupe deville for $600.00

it's in "good" condition, inside and out, and features the rarely found interior and roof.  it has 92,000 miles on it, a 472c.i. engine.

i was going to make it my daily driver:

only thing is, i'm in Houston, Texas... it's in Orlando, Florida

:/

You'd be better off asking how many gallons per mile.

Bearing in mind this is from a Brit view of any car market...

My opinion - 600 for a Caddy is quite good - IF the mileage clock's not been round the dial once already.

Looks nice, and with a lotta lurv could be even nicer.

For a Yank car? Probbably, yes.

No offence dudes, but you pay what, 60 cts a litre? We pay 1,25, and that's without converting to dollars. And your cars guzzle so much fuel  you still pay a lot.

Hmm... Let's see. It's about 2.5L/Gallon, right? That means our gas is just over 0.8 USD/liter.

Suggestion:

Cylinder leak-down test and compression test.

Make it clear that the sale is dependent on you having the car inspected by a mechanic of your own choosing.  usually 40-60 bucks, but mon-ay well spent.

Parts are easy to get for that car, and they're not that hard to work on.  If it checks out, and you're only dumping 600 bucks, might as well.  That's less than two months of car payments on a new one (at least considering mine...)

Good luck.

Looks in nice shape from the photos. It'd probably be worth the trip to pick it up. Bus down, drive back.

Something that old check for rust on the frame mounts and the section of frame that passes over the rear axel. Front frame often goes at about where the firewall meets the floor pans. If the frame is good, check the brake lines for rust, and the brake hoses for cracking.

At that mileage most of the mechanicals are probably still in good shape, only thing you'll want to do right away is replace the suspension bushings (Go with polyurethane replacements if you can swing it.) to tighten up the handling from cruise ship to land yacht.

Highway fuel mileage will probably be halfway ok - as long as you keep your foot out of the oilpan :)

Mmmm....Florida.  Tropical and salty.  Check for rust on the engine components.

Otherwise, although not a looker, hey not too bad either.

Sounds okay.  A car from the late 70's should be okay on the gas.  It won't be 30 mpg, but you should get 20 mpg easy.

For $600? Might as well. I need to find a used car cheap as I can't afford a new one also...

i use my 1980 cadillac for that ;)  www.f1f3.com/cadillac/

actually, i misread the email... the engine actually has only 82,000 miles, not 92,000.  and in order for it to go round the clock, it would have to have 1 million and 82 thousand miles on it, which i doubt ;)

i should get at least 12 MPG if i'm lucky.  my current car gets 6-7, so it'll be a step up.  i was planning on keeping this 74 as my daily driver.  to get me to university and back, to movies, etc. and keep the 80 as a weekend/work car.
