The GTC Rectrylinder

Add a few turrets and I could have myself a glorified space capsule! It's my first attempt to make anything other than weird shapes in 3dsmax. I'll improve it if I figure out how to use 3dsmax.

Three. Cylinder, cone, cone. Yes, it could be a missile if I made it thinner. What's a harpoon missile? That with a bulge in the back?

You should really use only one object if there is no need for a 'special' part.

[color=66ff00]No, it was a sound stage in New Mexico actually.

It makes a sound like "Har-ooosh!". You're thinking of the Hornet or Tornado ("vwooshvwooshvwooshvwooshvwoosh")

The box is indeed ugly. It'll be replaced with a proper ship soon. Just think of it as an Elysium with two engine pods until then.

Also, two questions. How do you get 3dsmax to tell you how many polys something is, and how do you apply a texture to something?

And the next sound you hear is "boomboomboomboom" and a button labeled Respawn pops up.

You're going to have a terrible time getting that into FS, I bet...if that is in fact your plan.  Not sure what it is you're going for, but I can tell you there is a better way of going about it.  I would suggest, since you're using Max, to take the tutorial on modeling a low poly ship.  This tutorial will teach you about working with general aspects of modifying geometry.

I'd recommend to try making a ship starting with a box, and then right click the box and convert it to an Editable Poly.  Then using the right menu you can select different sections of the poly using different methods such as vertex, edge, face, etc.  I usually prefer to make Terran ships using face extrusions, bevels, MSmoothing and Relax functions.  If you're aiming for a more alien or Shivan design and want to make those spiky extensions, then simply use the vertex selection method and take the points you want to drag out and pull them out in different directions.

Practice, experiment, research & learn before doing major projects, and you'll perfect your craft.  The key is persistence.

Then practice using the symmetry modifier.  Some who model ships prefer to concentrate on modeling only one half of the ship, and then just slapping a symmetry modifier on to make it perfect.  Be sure, once you've done anything using this method to right click on the modifer stack and select "Collapse All."

Also remember that in the Utilities section you can use the Polygon Counter.  Just go to Utilities tab, click the More... button, and then select Polygon Counter.  When you become more advanced in your modeling skills, using the Polygon Counter will be handy, because you'll have so much detail you know how to add to a ship that you'll have to work on retaining detail!!

Hope I've helped and haven't been too unspecific, vague, or general.

2468 polys!

2468 polys? For that?!

*coughs up blood*

That must some real quality low-quality boxes you've got there! :D

The box is only 16 polys! The cylinders are 300 each, cones are 200 or so.

It's good to see so many new modelers. I just got 3D Max myself, so perhaps I can create the IFOBD Siamese. With genuine block-action! I haven't the slightest idea on how to get it in the game, or make turrets, or even where to find a tutorial on Fs2-modeling, so this is gonna be insanely chaotic.
