The REAL Total Annihilation 2
Kal, it's become progressively more difficult for smaller developers to compete graphically with things like AoE3 on the horizon. In any case graphics have never meant anything to me for RTS games, which is why I still love TA, Warzone 2100 and even the older C&C series. TA had a very grandiose scale (which was easily managed from a superb UI) on the battlefield compared with newer efforts like Warcraft III, and that's what I'll always like about them.

Of course if you're just talking about the graphics, then they aren't as good as other offerings, no. :p

TA was the first true tactical real-time strategy game.
It had true line of sight, and elevation *did* matter.

The later can't be said about the C&C series - which *did* invent the de-facto interface -, and Starcraft / WC3 is all about micromaged special units. (Which is nice, but isn't all that tactical/strategic. It's more like chess than wargame).

The 2150 series (you can get the last of the trilogy at HOTU) brought a number of nice innovations into the picture.
...though I haven't played Warzone so I can't speak about that.

Did most people in this thread even play starcraft?
Starcraft not tactical and strategical? *start smilies* :wtf: :eek2: :shaking: :nervous:  *stop smilies* True, Starcraft is a lot of micromanagement (especially in the beginning of a 1v1 online :D ) but after that forget the micro and start macroing. A good player will outmine another using "Tactics" to kick another players expansion or so. *Following: a whole load of blablablabla* on topic.

TA owned! The AI was crappy tho.. (most ppl said that, i had difficult beating it cos i only played camps)

Hope AI will be bettter :)

TA was also very MOD-able.
BTW you can install some AI-s that give a run for your money.

I did actually. It always managed to kick my ass if i didnt see the whole map (Queller AI, the best around problably). TA is indeed quite MOD-able, ever seen the Star Wars TA conversion? quite fun to play :) And of course, there were tons of 3rd party unists around. I even managed to build a few crappy ones on my own, wasnt hard at all.

TA's why I started messing around with Rhino 3D, which led to a number of my early FS models that have never seen completion. :p

For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. Awsome.
TA was fun because of the pure RTS elements in it, you could hold massive battles between hundreds of tiny units and battle over a few hundred meters of ground over and over.

It may not look cutting edge graphics but hopefully it lives up to the original fun. :)

THQ puts doubts in my mind however...

I saw the entire article scanned in high resolution. Chris Taylor is quoted saying "f*** rock/paper/scissors", in pretty much those exact words.:D
I'm personally eager to see the superunits. Battleships that take two normal RTS screens and destroyers that can move out on the land... mmmmmmmm. The transport gunship does not sate my hunger for UNLIMITED POWER!
*pushes a button and unleashes screaming nuclear doom on enemy armies*
Mwhahaha! This game is going to rock, and not because of fancy graphics, but because of sheer content. [and the screenies you see don't even show the strategy portion of the game... though to be fair, it is only discussed in the rest of article]

And what is the problem with THQ, Grug? They did a fine job regarding Dawn of War, another cool RTS.

THQ = Red Faction, that memory still burns in my mind... :doubt:

DoW was ok I guess. I just hope this one doesn't suffer too badly from publisher syndrome...

Good find though Krackers, any mention of a release date?

I'm worried how they're going to pull off such large scale battles with physics in multiplayer. The lag would be horrendous...

They stopped making the old one too... :(

'As Chris Taylor puts it, "you can't just build in Moscow and click on Paris." Air units and even certain naval units can traverse the massive Supreme Commander maps quickly, but the biggest guns that you can produce in bulk will have to travel across the land. So the question becomes: how to get them there?'

Er...I thought that, real-life historically speaking, the biggest guns belonged to the battleships, the largest bombs belong to the aircraft, that sea travel was the slowest and that armies have moved across whole continents in just days, weeks and months if on foot? (German Barbarossa campaign, Mao's 'Great March', Soviet counter-attack in late 1941-early 1942).
