I believe they were going for the symbol for approximately equal.  Also, it should be >, not <, as it's the power of 2 below your postcount.

The trouble with this is that it really tapers off. There's thousands of posts between 2¹⁰ and 2¹² so there's no real progression there for the long term members.

You're right, I just noticed. ≈ is the approximately equals sign, but > would be better since you could have 8191 posts and it would still say 8191 ≈ 2¹² even though 2¹³ is 8192.

They don't actually resize the image at all. It just gets shown in the normal size but is cropped on the right. Here is an example: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,35883.50.html
