  • huh?.. Who?.. hey you kids, git off me lawn!
Wait, what did Volition think of him making FS3? I don't remember them ever making a statement or telling us how they felt.

Sandwich posted an email which he then pulled, as DaveB didn't want the exact contents public; the gist was along the lines of 'over our dead bodies' and doubting he could afford the license.

As for this, er, thing - I could honestly make better ships than that.  I'm not sure if that should be worrying or reassuring.  I love, though, how he takes a simple concept like 'space shooty' and manages to still shovel in uneccesarily complex things like ground combat.

Anyways, based on that interview we Officially Matter :D  And looking at it so far, thank all the various dieties we have Galactic Command rather than FS3.  Can you imagine if that was FS3?  Ugh.

the atoms belonging to the crew of the GTVA colossus would be spinning as we speak.

If it makes you feel better, think of it as pretty much confirmation that nothing is happening on the FS3 front as far as he is concerned. :)

Indeed, that's the best news we could hope for :) .
I always had the sneaking suspicion that he secretely acquired the FreeSpace IP and was developing FS3 in a deep underground bunker.

Le Game de Jure Promisses

It's a space combat game, with an epic plot that no one will remember because we don't like plots... well except for Wing Commander, FreeSpace, TIE Fighter... no one plays them for plots though. Oh yeah, we have ground combat too. ...and sex because we all know that IPs with lots of sex do better. Look at Oblivion, tons of sex there, or the new Galactica.

Yeah, this game isn't for mundanes. It's like Wing Commander and Freespace fans... which no one cares about despite them being the people most likely to buy this... are the original Galactica fans and this game is so much more awesome than them. This IP is like Edward James Olmos' giant middlefinger in the face of the spacesim community, it's that awesome.

Anyway, as for our awesome plot. The Rebels, who survived the war against the Betagons, are fighting the Terran Supremacy. As a warrior of the galactic control experimental dreadnought you have to destroy the Rebels. Totally awesome IP here, and as I said there's some sex and ground combat, there's also a fully dynamic stealth system.

It's _only_ for Nintendo Wii. Just imagine Wii-moteing through ground combat against the Betagons and then using its wireless controls to assert your _ALPHA MALE_ powers over the female (or male depending on how you do in the stealth portion of ground combat to capture Betagon biometric alteration technology) Rebel Commander. So yeah, totally awesome here with space combat, sex, ground combat, stealth, and sex change surgery minigame. Like Oblivion, tons of minigames there including the Flanau Hlaalu necrophilia minigame. Wii players want that!

Anyway, my totally original and high powered graphics engine for the Wii supports 16x16 texture maps. THOSE ARE REAL TEXTURE MAPS, not the FAKE ONES seen in other games! There's also real colored lighting from up to 4 different light sources! Only the Wii, not a PC, can enable this truly awesome graphics engine that I've had to cripple for the last few releases of games in this IP.

There's 100,000 star systems with a dozen career types. But it's a combat focused game in this awesome new part of the Faux Promisses universe. I'm sure that true spacesim fans, the people who buy my games and don't buy... well silly games like Galciv 2... just want to get their Wii into this!

You've played most of my games and know that they are powered by very advanced technologies around which complex games are wrapped.

You've been around long enough to know that for many many years, PC technology had to play catch up to my ideas and the things I wanted to do; and that it was only after several years and four titles in, that there were machines powerful enough to even run my games without choking.
Crap code.

I didn't get the license and a bunch of idiots who think they matter in the general scheme of things, felt that a Freespace 3 by any developer other than the original developers would not be Freespace 3.
Got that damn right, we'll be better off without FS3 than one developed by Smartarse.

Not to much to tell really.
Got that right too.

I can write a game that runs at 1 FPS on my computer.  Does that mean I can see The Future Of Gaming?

Remember, it has to run at 1 FPS for no immediately discernable reason and it cannot by coded to do so intentionally.

Don't worry, I'll disable collision detection because my game world is too complex.

No, it means the world isn't ready for your game yet.

Erm...

Normally I would come I his defense but this time, he just blurred something out that he shouldn't have...

For a while I have wanted to do a pure action shooter sans all the high end complexities and niche attributes of my own games. I felt that trying to do that would taint my IP, alienate my existing and loyal install base who would probably have me lynched amidst cries of "sellout!". So I wanted to play it safe by using another IP.

uh dude, that makes sense.

Seriously though, those graphics look pre Geforce2, Playstation1 era. I'm all for "gameplay before graphics" but that's ridiculous

He's basically saying that the FS IP holds less value than the BC one. The other IP he speaks of is FS.

Oh the irony. :) After everyone and their dogs have ran away from Smartgames, even grannies are coming to FS.

ignoring derek smart is a bit hard, that's like trying to ignore the death star or something.  :p

but really, Derek Smart is a non-issue, the sheer amount of talent we've seen in the community, it's enough to steamroll him and his internet-purchased PhD.

i haven't seen any one of his games yet that actually got a GOOD review... or a mediocre one for that matter..

You know, I'm new to this forum and the world of FS2 and FS2_open, and missed the era of the "War of Dereks" as a user posted above.  Didn't even know who he was, only a vague outline of what happened.

After reading that post I'm almost as shocked and offended as I would have been if Jack Thompson had attacked... anything... again.  Freakin nutter.

Anyway, back on topic.

Since when did people who play action shooters (of any style, space or common FPSs) NOT care about story, good voice acting, good acting (if applicable), and the occasional cutscene?  Seems to me that Freespace's story, voice acting, and cutscenes are some of it's leading strong points.  Sure, it's hella fun to play but it's the story that made it truly great, IMO.  And I'm sure I'm not the only one who agrees.  Hell, from all that I've read, you "idiots" as he put it, didn't want him to make FS3 specifically because he didn't want to continue the story based off of Volitions model.

Why did Halflife do so well?  And Halflife 2?  Good voice acting.  Good story.  All alongside fun gameplay.

Sounds like this guy really needs to get a clue about the "niche" he's aiming for.
