Is this wrong? I'm 24 and the girl i like is 36.

No, nothing wrong with it at all. I personally find it far more palitable than the boy being 36 and the girl being 24, that would just be so not right.....

It's completely up to you. And anyone who says age difference relationships are automatically wrong really needs to shut up.


The only warning I would give is that you have to consider kids in such a relationship a lot earlier than you might have to otherwise. A 36 year old woman who wants kids might not be willing to wait 4-5 years for you so make sure you're both of the same mind if this is a serious thing. Similarly there may be other issues if she wants to settle down and you don't. Beyond that, have fun. :)

Personally I follow xkcd's dating pool formula: don't date anyone under ((age/2) + 7). But this really is a private issue and you won't actually gain much by discussing it with people from the Internet.

Is it wrong? No. It's kinda weird, but you know that or you wouldn't have felt it neccesary to make this thread. And before anyone gets indignant, it is weird. It goes against the genetic imperative - he's chosen a mate with a significantly decreased reproductive potential (as compared with what he could get if he pursued women nearer his own age, or younger). It's why there'll always be a market for cosmetics - women want to look young because young is attractive at a genetic level. Of course, this doesn't apply the same in reverse, which is why there's much less social "stigma" (too strong a word really, but I can't think of a better one ATM) on an older man/younger woman pairing.

So, people are going to treat you two differently. Look at you funny. Your parents are going to be weirded out (same reasons as above, once removed). If you plan for this to be long term, there are other issues to consider, fertility being the big one, but there are other things too - different life goals will probably come into play. The things I've done and things I have planned for my twenties are very different from what I expect I'll want in my thirties. Things like this need to be considered if you're thinking long term. They don't apply if all you're expecting is a fling of course.

So, yeah. It's weird, not wrong. If you think you can get past that and deal with the associated problems then go for it. If not, don't.

It's more than likely something I wouldn't engage in due to many of the reasons that Black Wolfe stated.

A 10+ year gap in age seems a bit much, especially if this were to mature into something more than simple attraction.

Hell, I'm only 25, and my datable "range" is about three-four year buffer in each direction.  Now, granted, that's just me.  I wouldn't date an 18-20 year old, simply because I consider them to be at the beginning of their life, and it's better to have them explore a little and establish who they are and what they want.  I'm outside of that category, and thus want to deal with people that are closer to my own.  Someone that's beyond that three-four year buffer most likely has different priorities in life that don't mesh with mine, thus preventing a good pairing.  I agree, that there are exceptions to the rule, but generally, that's one of my criteria points that get evaluated.

Anyhow, that's a partial take on what I base my decisions off of.

24 and 36 is not too bad.

things to consider:

1) baggage - does she have kids? how much 'mileage' does she have?
2) physical age difference.  she's 12 years older than you.  means in a few years she's going to start going through menopause.  are you going to be ready for that? are you willing to go through that?
