I watched the Anime... it was cool but very weird ending.

They left a lot out of the novel - in Japan this is a sci-fi classic/etalon like Heinlein's Starship Troopers or Gibson's Neuromancer. Unfortunately it was never translated while I would very much like to read it.

The anime ends in classical samurai fashion - the protagonist going on a suicide mission, however with a twist as his "melding" with a computer has already given him enlightenment.
