Best youtube downloader?
Straight question, I just wanted to download some trailers and other things like Batman Vs alien Vs Predator etc. So i tried ORBIT and the metacafe ones but they seem to be failing left right and centre.

Any other options that you guys are aware of?

Why do you need a downloader for downloading such things when the browser can easily do it for you?

Just find the browser cache and get the file from there...

The Firefox extension DownloaderHelper seems to have a lot of useful features, although I've barely used it myself.

You'll be surprised at how many sites DownloadHelper can download videos from. ;) :nervous:

That's the one I used before I came across DownloadHelper.

Re: Best youtube downloader?
Oh, look, DownloadHelper has detected 2 .png files in this thread to download...

DownloadHelper can also download .mp4 versions of the files from YouTube, if that is any help. [oh, and you can download or should I say used to be able to download all 82 files from Erik McClure's "Album" page... Not that I tried that]

Also check out "DownThemAll", an extension for Firefox. Right-click on some blank area of a web page, eg. all the maroon colour in HLP and click "DownThemAll!" Find the file you want. You can also download .swf which is used for many flash games.

I've been using keepvid until it failed to pull several videos (All different versions of the same damned thing. -.-). Then I found this, which succeeded where keepvid failed.

Replay media catcher does a great job. You have to pay around $20-$25 for it, but if you like ripping things off youtube, then it's well worth it. It also has a couple other cool features.

Re: Best youtube downloader?
It makes me cry a little inside when people choose to pay for a shoddy program that helps them do something you could do just as well with free alternatives, or manually in about fifteen seconds and being independent of any services rendered by addons, programs or youtube downloader sites that may or may not function tomorrow. :sigh:

Especially if said shoddy program is exclusively meant for breaking some specific site's looser than life user agreement enforcement, like YouTube's. If you choose to ignore the user agreements that pretty much say that you won't make copies out of the videos, at least don't pay someone (or something) to do it for you. :ick:

I thought something like that would make you laugh. :drevil:

Reminds me of those days when I had to copy the files from IE cache.

True. It's none of their business that you want to violate a site's ToC. They're just committing daylight robbery.

Speaking of which, do you know that YouTube provides MP4 downloads to video uploaders only?

Reminds me of those days when I had to copy the files from IE cache.

Getting the files manually from cache is easy and practically foolproof way to circumvent all the flash applets that only apparently offer "streaming" content. File goes into cache. Player plays file. If you know what to look for, it's abysmally easy to just pick the file and copypaste it somewhere else, and no third party add-ons are necessary, nor are websites that basically offer a direct download link to the video file.

It is my preferred method of doing this sort of stuff, mostly because I try to keep my add-on amount as low as possible (All-in-One mouse gestures, AdBlock Plus, NoScript and that's it). Also it works on any browser, the only difference is the location of the cache and naming schemes of the files. Firefox uses just hex codes to name the files. Opera uses opr+letter-number codes but gives a valid file extension to the files as well, for example the files you get from YouTube are named oprXXXXX.mp4.

Incorrect. Anyone can force high quality with the &fmt=18 suffix after the video hash, or higher resolution with &fmt=22 should it be available. Files that the browser accesses and downloads to cache with these suffixes are MP4 files regardless of user status; you get them even if you're not logged on. So technically, YouTube offers the same files to everyone, although not everyone knows how to use the URL's to select content.

Or do you mean that if you have uploaded a video, YouTube offers you a direct download link to MP4 video files? Or that you can download your own video...? I have noticed no such thing. But I could just have missed it.
