I recently bought a Samsung n110 for mobile fun ie rom emulation and portable modding. I can now (and have been) truespace and UV mapping on the train.
 
All in all my new netbook does everything I want it to. I can watch my own dvds ripped and transferred via memory stick, using my mobile phone as a remote control. I can tweak audio in Audacity or tweak .tbl files on the fly. I've enjoyed a cheeky go on zsnes on the 07:50 to Farringdon. . . . But, and this is the biggest slap in the face from microsofts metaphorical cock I have ever suffered. .
 
 
I cannot change my desktop wallpaper unless I upgrade my os from 7starter to some other random crap.

Does it have a default wallpaper? If so, see if you can find the name of the image it uses and replace it with the new one using the same name?

Yes, well, if I were you, I'd upgrade to a real OS soon (basically, anything that is NOT Win 7 Starter). Just be glad they dropped the "Only 3 applications running concurrently" limit Starter was supposed to have......

Starter is a crippled. extra-cheap version of the OS for third world countries. No one in the civilized world should ever have starter. No one in the civilized world should even sell starter.

It came with my netbook. To honest I think i'm stuck with it. Unless I can cram another OS onto a 2gig SD card or a 16gig usb stick.

From what I've heard it should be sufficient to
- get a big enough USB stick
- format the USB stick to something (probably fat32)
- cram the contents of an OS installation CD/DVD and only the contents of an OS installation CD/DVD to the stick
- boot the netbook using the USB stick (may require fiddling with the BIOS so that the 'puter will actually try to boot from a stick).

What should be done by Microsoft is to sell an unabridged version of the OS (like Apple does) and provide you with the option of buying different grades of software packages to go along with that OS when you buy it. Again, I'm pretty sure this is what Apple does as well. That said, I'm not sure how it's possible to have such odd creatures as "Windoze Fanboyz" - with all the stupid crap I've encountered with Windows, it just doesn't make sense. And yes, those people are real...

Thats an invention of microsoft from XP onwards, basically sell a cut down version of the OS for the price you would have sold the full OS at and then use that as an excuse to sell the new one at an inflated price

doesn't win7 have an upgrade anytime feature? from what ive read the best version of 7 is installed even with the cheapest version, but is disabled untill you upgrade your license. of course i doubt its like that for starter.

i just did an xp install to a flash card on an old laptop with a rather piss poor set of boot options. while it had network and cd boot options, what it didnt have is usb or pcmcia boot (which would have allowed me to use my sd reader or the cf adapter that i had in my giant box-o-adapters). but a little 5 dollar dongle and i was able to stick my 2gb cf card where its hard drive used to be. managed to cram xp and drivers into half of it, leaving some 900mb available for software. im still not sure what to do with it. sd cards can be made bootable, i have both vista and xp on sd cards, which can be installed through usb quite easily. you could probably install xp to an sd card, however thats if your card slot is bootable. i know the card slot on my laptop kinda sucks about that.

to make it possible to install windows from one of those usb flash drives, you need this program and an xp cd (i know from expirience that xp will fit into a 2gb card). then your netbook should allow you to boot from usb, and install to the netbook's internal sd card. then its a matter of finding all the drivers.
