Blue Planet AoA - Chronicles of a newcomer
It's done then. I just finished this (previously unknown to me) campaign. And while my finger was still squeezing the trigger, I must admit that my killing ratio was not spectacular. Not because I was a rookie, oh no. The reason was out there, with the nebulas and the Shivans, and with my ships. Seeing the 14th Battlegroup emerging, with its destroyers ant its escorts, made me feel...complete, made me loose concentration in dogfighting. Do you know what I mean? I surely hope so. It made me feel like I belong there, that the brit chap from the Orestes command was indeed addressing to me. I did feel my heart ripped from my chest when "WE" executed that United Terran ship, I did feel like a tool in someone else's game, as you, the Creators, must have intended.

So these words are for you: I don't know how many you are, how hard you worked, because I belong to those "fortunate" gamers who simply take goodies for granted. I loved the ship models, I loved the voice-acting, I loved the story behind the beams and explosions. I thought that the cutscenes were cleverly inserted into the plot, and I would have taken Corey and Taylor out for a drink for having watched my back all that time.

Enough said for a first post. I have a lot of questions, but I'll first wait and see how bored you were of this overture.  :)

More coming your way. There's a sequel coming out very soon.

Oh, I am quite aware of that, trust me, the ending of the first part is actually DEMANDING it. I can already see (in my mind, of course, not necessarily in yours) Admiral Bei commanding one of the decent Terran capital ships, and his sons escorting him for further endeavours. Quick question then - and I am really sorry if it's already been answered: are you considering using voice acting for that one from the beginning or...it's for a later release?

You bring a happy tear to my eyes, partner. A tear of 68% joy, 41% pride, and 1% beamz.

Heck, that's how I felt finishing the campaign the first time too. And that's how it got voice acted! But you should know that BP is the original product of one mad genius, our man Darius.

We would love to have War in Heaven voice acted upon release. I've daydreamed about hiring Glynnis Talken Campbell and Merle Dandridge to do the lead roles (and Campbell at least is willing to work with us.) But the fact is that the release is ready to go now, and voice acting it in all its insane dialogue-heavy splendor would probably take another year.

Voice acting is going to have to wait.

Then I will say that Darius deserves credit for his exquisite campaign, and you and your team, while bringing it to the table in its new format, deserve credit as well for making an old dog feeling as if being young again :) Oh yes....I was a cadet-lieutenant (in real life) when I first played Freespace 2, and now, with time and ranks gathering on one's shoulders, good old things kinda fade off...So thank you again for giving back that special something that I was missing.

I am looking forward to your next release, which I am to understand will be very soon. I already know that I will be amaized, so, with your permission, I'll update my chronicles with my hopes and expectations. And, by the way, General, as you know, a commanding officer is hardly pleased  :)

Re: Blue Planet AoA - Chronicles of a newcomer
2nd entry

"I am yet to arrive on the...other side. I didn't even get the chance to see whether Corey or Taylor chose to follow me or not. I am leaving my fleet with a heavy heart. Those ships, those gratious silhouettes that once made my feel proud of what mankind can come up with...They are still with me, haunting me, possessing me. Those people, I called them friends. Many of them, I'm sure, weren't aware they represented the Phalanx of Death, the beachhead of an invading army. Next time we meet, it shall be in combat. Would my future allies have something as powerfull as to take out the Orestes? Would I have what it takes to fly against my old comrades, to whom I gave operational orders just a few hours ago? Would I hear that Dekker guy voice again, asking my allies and me to surrender or be destroyed?  I guess time - that undaunted trader of lives - will eventually answer those questions."

I said "cheers" in my own way, Dekker ;)

Re: Blue Planet AoA - Chronicles of a newcomer
Hate to burst your bubble a bit, but War in Heaven will feature an all-new protagonist. That doesn't mean that Sam Bei or the other guys from the 14th BG don't make an appearance later on, but you're not playing as Sam Bei again.

Also, WiH unfolds several months into the war, not directly after the 14th's arrival in Sol.

On the Blue Planet site (in the media section), you can find some prose that will fill in a few of the gaps between AoA and WiH, as well as a few hints as to why the GTVA decided they needed to invade Sol.

Re: Blue Planet AoA - Chronicles of a newcomer
Thank you for your touching praise udecebal :) The creative process is always a joy to undergo and, like most creative works, the campaign was a sort of personal reflection of this author's life experiences. It's always a privilege to be able to share it with others and see them grasp their own meanings from it.

The creative process wouldn't have been complete without the awesome contributions of various people in the community, though :)

Re: Blue Planet AoA - Chronicles of a newcomer
Well, it was a privilege for me, as a "community member" or just as a freespace2 player, to be able to see someone else's life experience shaped in the form of a very well put together campaign. SInce I am new here, I have looked some of the forums in the meantime, and I must say some of them lack...personality. I mean, sure, "you must go here, he must go there, we must shoot the bad guy" but that's about it. As a result - and this is an answer for you too, The E - there is no bubble to be burst, because there is too little there to start a bubble in the first place. You, on the other hand, did give me the reason to think beyond, to consider what would happen in the sequel, and that's, at least in my opinion, a recipe for success.

So my advice to you is to press it to the floor, mate. Creative process is never easy, is not always fast and, regretfully, seldom appreciated by everyone. BP, on the other hand, is. So give me more, burst bubble or not! :)
