My brother is having constant problems with his system.  It all started about a year ago when his old video card burned up.  He went to this place a had a new video card (Asus GTX650 Ti Boost 2gb), two new 150gb VelociRaptors and Windows 7 64bit pro installed.  Note: his old motherboard had PCI-Express 2.0, but the new video card is a PCI-Express 3.0.  Please help.

Well he's had a lot of errors on his system.  From time to time his Kaspersky PURE 3.0 has gone down without any warning and other weird things.  It happened right after he got his system back and just today.  The guy who did his system was blacking out at times. He also did mine before he was blacking out and I have had no problems at all.  Some other techs think it could be that the new video card doesn't have the proper bios updates to make it work with his old motherboard (Asus M3N-HD/HDMI). Please ask questions.

A PCI-E 3.0 card should work fine in a 2.0 motherboard.  It should work even with a 1.0a motherboard.  There were people reporting issues getting PCI-E 2.0 8800GT cards to work with 1.0a motherboards with certain chipsets, but my 8800GT ran fine with a PCI-E 1.0a DFI motherboard with an NVidia chipset.

Unless you can be more descriptive with your issues the best I think we can do is throw this at you.

Edit: that's probably not true, but I'm sure you can find more modern troubleshooting guides with a small amount of google searching.

Thank you for the link Polpolion, but I think this is only going to get resolved by taking it to another shop.  I'm sorry I couldn't get you guys more info.  Thanks to all of you for the help.

I doubt that either the GPU or Motherboard requires any BIOS updates, but you might want to check the Power Supply. The card will likely require a set amount of Amps to be delivered on the 12v rail, which could cause blanking/blacking out if it is inadequate. Depending on how the old GPU died, it may have impacted the PCI-E slot it was installed in, if there is another free x16 slot, try that.

i actually had a hilarious event when i got my 660, was upgrading from gtx260 to the 660 and the mobo refused to boot with the new card until i updated the bios.
Not too similar, as it is a pci-e 2.0 board, just though about tossing my experience out here.

You may be having an issue with the power supply being either 1) shoddy or 2) inadequate to power the video card.  Check the min power requirements for the vid card; and check if the PSU is from a reputable brand.
