I've adopted the Nebulon B, and I thought I'd start a new thread to mark the change from PHRiSCo to me. Here's the work in progress, I'll start unwrapping it tomorrow.

I've always really liked the Nebulon-B as ungainly as it is.

Me too, but it's never looked anywhere remotely near as good in any games where it's been featured as in the movies - hopefully this will rectify that!  I think it's been a difficult ship to capture due to having a somewhat simple design yet tons of detail all over the ship.  Poly constraints and all.

From what I can tell so far, it's not the poly constraint that's stunted its appearance in-game, it's the chore of UV mapping it. It's only around 50k polygons right now, but it needs a lot of little islands in the uv map.

The UV mapping is ongoing. In the meantime, I bring you the Nebulon-B8! You can tell how powerful it is by the number of module stacks it has. As a bonus it also generates clean electricity if left in the wind.

This is the obvious design conclusion that the Imperial Escort Frigate from TIE Fighter predicted. :P

I get it, the B-2 had 2 pylons, so the B-8 must have 8.  Is it bad if I actually think this would be awesome to have in game, as an easter egg at least?

"...venting the entire ship's atmosphere out to space"

I'm sorry, what?!?  What kind of military vessel would be built without airtight bulkheads separating every single freaking compartment in the ship?  They've been doing it since the earliest days of oceangoing navies, so why would they think it's ok to build a spacecraft that's designed to be in battle and allows a single breach to vent the entire atmosphere?  I don't buy it.  Definitely not in our canon.

And I'm not totally sold on the idea that the Frigate was originally an Imperial design that ended up in rebel hands occasionally, since we never see it in Imperial use in any of the movies.  I think several of our other ships make reference to that fact though in the tech briefings...though that's subject to change.

This was a long time ago though.

(I'm on your side of the discussion, just saying that these were most likely built before we had oceangoing navies.)

Haha, ok +1 for being technically correct.

I'm 100% in favour of disregarding parts of the "Legends" that don't fit with what we see onscreen. The Nebulon B is always in my mind the archetypical Rebel ship, like the Gallofree transport.

There's a lot of milSF out there which posits that removing air from outer hull compartments is a good idea. The theory is that by removing air, you also shockwaves transmitted through it and are thus limiting the concussive effects a nearby impact or explosion would have on other compartments.

That's fine, but still doesn't explain why every other individual inhabited compartment on the ship would for some reason vent their entire atmosphere just because there's a breach somewhere else in the ship.  Warships are compartmentalized for a very good reason.

That was already in the old X-Wing Handbooks. And already in the first Mission of X-Wing if you get all freighters a Imperial frigate jumps in. Rebels capture some frigates from the Imperials. Kuat Drive Yards build also all the Star Destroyers.
