It's in the poll title :)

To me, the spiritual successor to Freespace has already been made, and it's called HOUSE OF THE DYING SUN. If only it had a full blown mission editor...

I'd actually like to see the story progress.  So I'd prefer to see a sequel.

Besides isn't FSPort (especially with 2014 MVPs) already kind of a 'remake' of FS1?

No. A port is very much a different beast from a remake; compare the differences between FS1 and FSPort to the differences between Silent Threat and Silent Threat: Reborn.

<MageKing17> How did this code ever work in the first place!?

I would prefer a spiritual successor, that does have Freespace in the gameplay, only.

Actually i will never see a new official FreeSpace game, again :).
For me, that would be the best way to handle the established universe.

So i prefer a new universe with a new story and so a complete new adventure.

There are already too much goddamn Remakes and Reboots out there. As fas as i know our timeframe is moving forward and so i have new experiences every day. So there is no reason to look back...

  • Oceans rise. Empires fall.
Option C ...

For one, if the series were to recieve a new installment I don't think it would strike a note consistent with the last two game - which admitidly are already very different ... not to mention that advancement in technology and technique of video game design and production would introduce additinoal points which would result in a very different game...

Two, I think the story is in a good place were it ended with Freespace 2 - sure you can advance the story as a fan and make a lauded mod out of that; it has been done ... on top of that, the universe is too much of blank canvas that a new installment wouldn't have to retroactively introduce elements (like Freespace 2 did with the "Battle of Deneb" in the intro, for example)

Any new Freespace needs more parallelisms.

I love the retail campaigns, they've got an unbeatable nostalgia, but I think this community has long passed a point where people are fantasizing about what they wish could be officially created, and are just actually making professional quality campaigns.

Between the Ashes is basically an in-universe expansion pack campaign with all of the modern mission design and gameplay elements everybody likes nowadays (coolass mission mechanics, LOTS of lore, tons of in-game fiction to read, and professional-sounding voice acting). If there were anything official released, I'd like it to be along the lines of Between the Ashes. But Between the Ashes is out, so...  ;7

Is there an option 4 where we make official a lot of the really good stuff produced by the community into finished, polished games available on large distribution platforms such as Steam? It always saddens me when I think about how few people have experienced the excellent stuff made over the years.

Considering we're not Interplay, have no affiliation with Interplay and probably hate Interplay for its bungling of several aspects of its IPs and developers, I doubt that's feasible. Especially when there's no community workshop.

I'd rather not think too much about a Freespace 3. All it would do is build up unrealistic expectations no game could hope to meet. Me, I'll just be happy to see BP's grand finale. Good enough for me.

Also, I vote we rename this topic to something like "Poll : New Freespace game", 'cause it always gets me scratching my head whenever it gets bumped :P

I think it could be a spiritual successor to FreeSpace. It could be a FPS/space simulation hybrid, much like Star Citizen and Star Wars: Battlefront, a future reboot of Shattered Stars using an entirely new game engine, new plot and universe (completely unrelated to Total Recall 2012, but relates entirely to reality), new ship designs, and new languages and writing system. Much like House of the Dying Sun and Ace Combat 7.

Well, House of the Dying Sun borrows elements from Shattered Stars, since it was set in a distant galaxy and an alien government... more or less... I think.
