Upgrade - Laptop or tower?
Howdy techies, I need some advice / opinions.

My 2014 vintage FrankenPC is showing its age and has probably reached the limit of its economical upgrade potential.

Secondly my GI issues are flaring up quite regularly now, and the only reliable relief I get is laying down horizontal with a heat belt, which pretty much precludes sitting up at a desktop.

A work solution is to use my work laptop 💻 with a laptop stand, which seems to work reasonably well.

So I’m thinking what to do about replacing my gaming / writing / mod creation PC. I see two paths:

1 - get a laptop for about £500 for writing, basic mod creation and playing indie/retro/emulated games, then get a more powerful gaming tower PC later and hope that my health improves enough to actually use it one day…

2 - get a gaming laptop for say £1000ish to replace the 2014 gaming tower AND use as the daily driver for writing/modding (which I can hook up to my monitor, keyboard, HOTAS, mouse etc when I’m well enough to sit up at a desk)

As for my gaming expectations - I’m not bothered about playing at 4K since I only have a 1080p monitor, I’m not fussed about using antialiasing (I grew up with a ZX spectrum and Atari 2600 - so blockiness and jaggies are my friends 😜) and I’m not bothered about max settings.

Ability to do Ray Tracing would be good simply because it seems that will become the industry standard minimum soon and I want to future-proof my hardware a bit since I may not be able to afford to upgrade or replace it for another 5-10 years)

Decent storage capacity would be handy, although plug-in external SSDs can sort that I guess.

Sorry for the long-ass post. I would greatly appreciate your input and advice about which route I should go down, and what specs / performance  I can expect for the money

Re: Upgrade - Laptop or tower?
I'd vote for option one, purely since you're interested in future-proofing and ray-tracing. And even if your health doesn't improve in a time frame you're hoping for, you can still set up your monitor and inputs on your laptop stand to play desktop from bed. A bit of a hassle, but possible.

Option two would probably be more cost effective than buying two devices, but it's much more limited as far as upgrades go.
